.17 hornet, or .17 remington

I've been thinking about getting another CZ 527 American.. I have the 221 fire ball and love it..I want one in .17 cal..and was looking more towards the .17 rem..would like your opinions..thanks

We need more information to make an educated answer. Reload or not? Range expectations? Hunting or target? Both are great cartridges but have different merits.

I have 2- 17 fireballs..my favorite cartridge next to the 6 mm. BR. ..I reload..haven't purchased factory ammo since 1999..other then rimfire ammo, and shotgun ammo for the kids to shoot clays with..
This gun will probably punch more holes in paper but also for coyote, and field rodents..

With coyotes on the menu either the 17 Rem or 17 Fireball. Both are a hoot to shoot.

Why dink around with Hornet brass? Lots of 17 choices w/o wearing that millstone.;) Get the boiler room to match your needs and neck away...

My CZ 527 American Hornet has absolutely amazed me and my fellow hunting groundhog hunting partners. Shoots 20 gr Vmax at 3650 fps very accurately. One shot kills out to 300 yards with regularity. Have shot them out to 355 yards but that is the outer limits. All this with a 21.5 inch barrel and 10.3 gr of powder. I also have a 17 Remington with a 24 inch barrel and shoots 25 gr bullets at 4000 fps but longest shot is 416 yards. It takes 24 plus gr of powder to do this though. The 17 Hornet is my favorite truck, carry, gun out to 300 plus yards. The brass holds up much better than old 22 Hornet brass also.

The 20 practical makes much more sense to me then a 204 Ruger ..I'm all set us for 223 rem... so a change over would be less costly to me..I don't have any 20 cal. Yet , but I'm working on the 20 practical..reloading die parts , and neck bushings are in rout right now to my house..then an AR barrel ..as for the 17's does any one have a 17 javelin..how does it compare..also what is barrel life like pumping 17 rems. down the tube a 4k fps.

Guys, I'm with most of you. I have two .17FBs and two .20 Practicals but the OP's looking at a factory gun, .17 Remington or Hornet only. Some of the other calibers aren't available in the 527. My choice would be the .17 Remington pushing 30 grain bullets and not the .17 Hornet.

You would be able to go a bit faster with the 17 rem. but might get a bit more barrel life out of the 17 hornet. Both accurate...either one
would be awesome. Heck...you need to have one of each...LOL. I had a 17 remington which was a lazer. It had an average velocity of
4165fps. with 25 v-max. Barrel was toast at just over 3000 rounds. I probably should have not pushed it to the extreme...but would
probably do it all over again as like said it was a lazer at long or short range. I don't have a 17 hornet but love my 22 hornet. I think
you would enjoy either caliber. let us know what ya end up with.

as for the 17's does any one have a 17 javelin.
Do you mean the 17 Javelina? That case is a lot more work to make. The shoulder is pushed back and then cut down. Efficient, but a lot of work. A straight 17/222 would be a lot easier. If your worried about barrel life just shoot the 17 Rem and don't load it to max.
As far as the 204 doing everything better. Your only talking about 2" of wind drift at 400 yards. Anything less and they're pretty much ballistic twins.

My vote is for the 17 Rem since you already have the FB. I don't see the hornet as useful or popular enough to be a long term investment. If you do go with the 17 hornet buy all the brass while you can.

Words of the wise..it appears only nosler has brass available for the 17 rem. Right now..I'm sure is just to try and force people to but the new production hornet..I'm going to go with the 17 rem..was going to order brass today but wanted to think it over some more....I need to just finish one project before starting another..my shooting Affliction is very costly now thanks to you guys..
Oh..who said get one of both..haha..I would and then sell off the one I don't use..but my wife would have me sleeping in the garage..I'm pretty much a home body, don't drink, or do drugs..I don't smoke..I need to spend my money on something right..hell I don't even go to the mall for clothes..I order everything on line and it comes right to my front porch..the only time I leave the house is to buy powder or reloading components, I leave to visit the gun club and shoot..and go to work..I'm pretty boring..but got some fun, cool guns and I'm happy .

Check patsreloading.com he has new 17 Rem R-P at $71 per hundred new brass.

I would think the misled is more consistent for 9$ more..maybe not

I'm not sure what the misled is. I snatched several hundred of the new beautifully boxed norma 17 Rem at grafs a few months back but you have to keep an eye out for it when available. They sure make pretty brass. Gunbroker has it occasionally if you can find it without offering a first born.

just checked and it is still in stock at grafs
