Building me a 17 Ackley Hornet on a CZ 527 action with Shilen barrel. Hoping to make a nice walking groundhog gun and somethin to shoot 175-200 yard Fox squirrels this Fall!!
Has the brass quality ever improved? I was looking when they first became commercially available and no one was having very much luck with the brass quality. I've recently been pondering building one myself.
Its perfect for ground squirrels.
Mine shot really well too for a long time, and I eventually replaced the barrel with a lilja. I figured that while I was at it, I'd replace the stock wood which I never liked after seeing it warp overnight after I removed the action from the stock to fiddle with the trigger and such. I put on a laminated wood stock and did a full bed job on it. I have no wishes of it shooting any better than it does now. They are great little rifles. My little CZ 527 Varmint 17 Hornet, like most of the others that I hear about, shoots so darn good right out of the box I don't know that I'd ever have one built. Unless of course, I shot the barrel out of mine, then I'd go with a custom barrel but I'm guessing it'll take a VERY long time to shoot the barrel out of one of these little 17 HH's.
