147 ELD coming apart

First off if anyone is having a problem with any type of a product you have to get a hold of the manufacturer and bring it to they're attention and give them a chance to figure out what is going on if there is a problem to begin with. If you don't it isn't fair to the manufacturer.

Later, Frank

I used to sell Motorcycle accessories. It is pretty upsetting to see that one of your customers is having an issue and the first thing he does is post it on a forum! For God's sake, give the supplier a chance to assist in the problem before you hit the air waves with it. OK, I'm done. Please continue.

OMFG, this is such old news, the poorly designed and well marketed failing ELD bullets is such old news.
Hornady does not care, has known about the jackets fragging for almost 2 years.
Some of you guys sound like you think Hornady is actually a reputable and well run company, argh argh argh, NOT!!!!!

This Explains two missing shots in Our Long Range State Championship. Cost me a State title.
A similar story from a fellow at the Berger in Phx, doing great till the no shows took him to the bottom on s single target.
A good few of us have been there.

The ELDs are the biggest con job in shooting to date.

I seems like every trip to the range, I get at least one target where 5 shots produces 4 holes. I log each shot and after the session write a corresponding number adjacent to each bullet hole, but I've never been able to clearly see where two bullets went through one hole. Now it begins to make sense.

These were 6 mm 105 HPBT in the red box shot from an 8 twist X-Caliber barrel. From what I read above, 98% reliability just won't cut the mustard in competition. But I do feel I get what I pay for, and if I want 100% reliability I'll pay the Berger mark up.

I will say though that one of the best bullets I shoot out of my 6BR is the 105 A-Max. Have to get them off the secondary market, but for now that ain't so bad. Sad that they don't make it anymore. The 108 ELD-M shoots almost as good for me and my equipment...and old eyes.

I'd have to agree that the whole melting tip brouhaha was a not-so-clever snow job over inaccurate B.C's revealed by the new radar based ballistic equipment that came onto the market.

I’ve dug many 208 AMAX’s out of the dirt at 1000 yds. All tips intact. If the tips melt then they must re-solidify prior to impact.

I have almost 1200 of the Hornaday 105 BTHP Match bullet down that same brand barrel and twist. All have made it to an impact out to 1000 yards. Either steel, paper, or ground (berm). Most of those shots had 1-2 spotters watching.

SMH. Obviously you haven't actually read the info on the tips and just went by internet ramblings. Try to actually read and not go by the internet. A litle Cliff note for you. Tips were not melting. They were deforming enough to effect BC which doesn't need to be much.

The last bunch of 140 ELD bullets I loaded had the tips break off on about 6 of 200 bullets; but I think I dropped the bag of loaded ammo on the floor.

A fellow shooter in F-class has had several bullet failures with the 147's. .260 Remington, 1x7 twist, 6 groove (believe x-caliber barrel) shooting them ~ 2850? I believe the first failures were at the Long Range Regional Match in Missoula last September. He had 3 failures. This May at our Billings Mid-range match he had another 3. Then this June 5 failures (4 on the last string). Fast twist and even # grooves could be contributing factors as Frank has pointed out. He has a new barrel; Bartlein 5R and is waiting on a reamer to chamber it up. Switching to 140 Berger Hybrids. (the 147 did shoot great...I think he had a 190 with a 0 on one string...that hurts:().

Oh brother, not melting, just deforming. Let me get my hip boots on. It's getting deep.
But what can one expect from Team Hornady.

The truth unlike the internet "melting" bs that has been spread. Pretty upfront of them to even bring it up and tell people once it was found with Doppler testing. Some companies might have just hid the facts and brought out the ELDs as just a new bullet. But yeah believe what you like and spin it how you like.

Lawman, yeah a 7 twist is pretty fast. I have only shot them in 8 twist 5R Bartleins and no issues.
