1000yrd gun questions

I`ll probably go with a custom action in my next project:rolleyes:

My `smith wants my 700 fh action and if he`s willing do buy it and the price of trueing actions more I might think of a lawton. Any idea what the wait is on one of them? Is a lawton action better than a trued rem 700?

About the wind drift, was that for a 5mph cross wind or a 20mph+ variable? I wont take a shot at a p.dog past 500yrds if the winds past 15mph with my 1:10 87`s in my 6br @3050fps. I don`t like to shoot match bullets at the critters cuase the ricoche is much worse. The wind is a very big factor in any long range shootin out here. Do you think a 115 6mm @3100fps could match a 7mm 168@3000+ in 25+mph winds? Honesty I don`t think I`de do that good with either one...

I`m sure it would be way easyer to learn to shoot really far away with a 6mm or 6.5 but the day`s of light winds are really few out here and a bigger gun just makes more sence to me. The sad part is I`m truly ignant at shootin that far and all good wisdom is in order! I ordered a book called 1000yrd precision shooting yesterday and I`m looking forward to getin my nose in it.

I guess if I can`t make my mind up I could always make one of each:thumb: Truely, this project`s been in my head for almost a year cuase I`m not sure what to do...I`m ready to go with what feels right.

I`m not commited to anything yet. I will get a custom reamer and a krieger bbl coming to look at me soon.

Well, I made up my mind and got a McMillan A5 ordered yesterday, I did a lot of thinking about it and decided to have a gun I can use in the field too. I went to the annual gun club meeting and asked about the f class shoots they got and theres only three next year and everybody shoots with a sling with there high power guns @1000yrds so they`ll need to get some new targets for me. Bipod shootin is the way I feel I need to go so the A5 is for me.

Is there any output anybody can give me on the badger bottom metal? I told them to inlet the stock for that but I`m starting to wonder if I want to spend 320 bucks for a 6" piece a metal. Is it worth it??? At least it`ll last forever. I ordered a badger rail for it for 150 so I guess I`m on the right track:rolleyes:

Know I get to make my mind up for which NF scope I want:lol:

Patchhound,
First off 320 for badger floorplate seems a little high. For about the same price you can get a d.d. ross. If you look around a little should be able to get one for under 300 bucks.
For a mcm a5 Might i suggest looking over on sniper hide a guy has some already to go. For a short action rem. Sorry i don't remember what action you have.
As for nf scopes. I don't own one YET but i will. From what i have read so far a br might be what you're looking for. I hear the targets are changing size next year. Alot of guys are going with the 1/8th" adjustments of the br. The br has adjustable paralax on the objective.
The NF NXS is a side mounted paralax adjustment. It also has 1/4" adjustments. The NXS has reticles not provided in the br. I just can't remember which ones.
Just thought of this. What caliber are you going with? Reason i ask is what are the comeups for 1000 yards? You should know that in case you need to get a sloped base"i.e. 15moa, 20moa etc.".

Patchhound,
The listing for mcm a5 on sniper hide is jwprecision.ca . Hope this helps with the build.

Thanks PJ.

I got an A5 ordered direct through McMillan Bros. Friday, had to get two teeth pulled to get a day off...) and they told me 18 weeks so like I said,"now I got more time to get more cool stuff". I must admit I did just that, I went to pay next years gun club dues at the gun shop and fell in love with a S&W M&P 40 so know I got a kick ass side arm and no krieger bbl:love::cry:I`ll order one in Feb.

Now, back to business, I`m going with the 7saum, it`s got all I need to do what I want...I`m building it in a long action so I can seat bullets out far in a repeating gun and a saum feeds better in a Rem than the SAM. Guess I`ll have to live with the brass but I have`nt heard much bad about the UM fodder anyway.

I talked to my `smith Sat. and he`s for it. I`m still thinking about getting a custom reamer for her and probibly will. What through me off a little was he said the bullet might drag a bit past 26"s and I might not want to go with 28"s. I will shoot 162-180 to see what shoots best and with H1000 I think I should be ok. any opinions?

About the NF scopes, I`m really undecided what one I want to get. I`m between the 5.5x22,8x32nxs & the br.

Now I get to think of shootin my new M&P 40 while I freeze my ass off!!!:thumb:

Patchhound,
I ordered my a5 about a month ago. Was told about 20 weeks. Long time for a chunk of fiberglass.
As for your barrel bartlien barrels might be a way to go.They are two guys that left krieger. Might be able to get a barrel easier from them. I hear krieger can take a while not like the stock though. For krieger try a look at brunos shooters supply. They stock a few krieger barrels.
As for the scope a nxs 8x32 was recommended as a way to go. Maybe a br 8-32 if you like 1/8th" clicks.

Patch,
Bruno's list a few barrels. A 1/9 twist #4 contour 29" long. A 1/9 twist #7 contour 29" long. i think a 1/14 twist 29" long #7 contour was listed also. All 270 bucks. Hope this helps.

Broughton barrels are very good barrels, and they are saying 8-10 weeks on delivery. Tim North, the owner of Broughton barrels is a first class guy to do bussiness with also.

thanks for the advice Jeff,

That 5c barrel sounds good, I just might have to give them a try instead. Their heavy target is just what I need and I like the .940 better than the .900 muzzle on the #17 krieger, same weight too. they`re a bit more spendy but I can go for that payment plan, 50% down is good.

Thanks for sending me in that direction.

Patchound,
you won't be disappointed, I have several of the 5c in 6.5x284 and they clean up as easy and they shoot great also
