1000 yards target

49 views and no replies. Here goes, at Manatee Gun Range we shoot 8" AR500, and 10" AR500. When I first started shooting 1000 yards we used 18"x18" this is a good size.

Hands down, AR500 for steel.

Size is somewhat dependent on your gun's accuracy and scope power.

I wouldn't go less than 18" square. You can always hang a smaller one next to the big one when you're feeling frisky.

Nothing's more frustrating than not spotting your shots.......

Alf is spot on. Got to be able to see your hits to get on
the plate. A dirt berm is great to have behind your plate.
Another thing that is easy to do is weed-eat or mow the
grass around the plate short so that you can pick up your
hits and dial it in.

I hate my home range, more grass then dirt. Manatee is the opposite more dirt then grass which is great. Down south in Palm Beach County in the canefields where I'm from we could shoot out over a mile. This is where I cut my teeth at LR, 18x18 inch steel, then 8"x8" steel, dirt backstop. My .300 Lapua was built for this place, Gre-Tan did a great job as always.

We're using this "Big Dog" target. Although, for 1000, the 3/8 is overkill and a bit too heavy for that distance... even with 300 Win Mag. 1/4" would be better.

Also, we had to replace the bolt system with a free hanging coat hanger system to get the gong audible.

I plan to get some 1/4" copies of this gong made for weight reduction and better reaction at longer range.

What is the best size steel target to use at 1000 yards and what tip of steel

Shaun,
I often don't have a spotter to help me so bigger is better for me however I live in VERY steep terrain so my 1K steel isn't on flat ground that I can drive on, I can get close then have to walk up hill to the steel to repaint so I couldn't go 4'X4' like I wanted because of weight so I went 21" high by 25" wide no reason for that size just had a piece that size but I can usually get on with most any accurate rifle first shot, then center up on it then move to the smaller steel. In my case we have huge Basalt rims (rocks) some bigger then a house all over the place so for big stuff like the .408 or 50 bmg etc. we paint dots on the rims and shoot them, I will never run out of them and other then the paint there free as long as I pay my land taxes,....which I did yesterday :( :'( I recently did put in a 1000 yard range here at the ranch that I built a road from the bench to the target but I have to drive a mile up the road so I still use the one outside my loading room the most, I guess my next project will be another loading/shooting room up the road :)
Wayne.

I have a hard steel target same size as f-class 1000 yard target. I made cardboard templates for score rings and use chalk to go around them. Always best to be able to see where you hit or it is hard to learn anything. Can of black spray paint to cover the hits and re chalk and it is ready to go again.

With my target as posted above which is all steel....the hits through a spotting scope from 1200 yards stand out like a 5 carat diamond shining in a Billygoats behind! The only time you need to drive to the target is to record/photo the impacts and to repaint!! :) ;D The white bull is AR400 and overall bull size matches the Palma/Creedmoor paper target for 800, 900, and 1000 yd. shooting! However it works well for shooting all the way back to 1600 yards.

Well it sure holds up well I can only see one possible ding in the lower right 44" bull.
