1000 yard IBS agg Match

I think we also must change our thinking . Look down the shooting line Competition end has 8 Gray hair old men with pretty guns .
The other end is packed full ugly black guns And young shooters . And a mix of varmint guns . Guys we need figure a way to get new shooters . I worked for years getting new shooters . Made it to 20 shooters Shooting gongs . 4 or 5 wanted to shoot competive paper . Along with that came rules Weight being the biggest factor . 6 months later we had 4 to 6 shooters and 15 who stopped.
The answer I feel is A pro class Or multiple pro classes With a amature varmint hunter class no pro shooters . And definitely a black gun class . Larry

Well I have shot the agg format and I think we will loose shooters not get more. I talked to one shooter that shot two 49s and won his relays but not the match. If he was in a shootoff I think he would have had a better chance of winning. With the people I talked to including myself we would like it to stay with shootoffs and like people have said try having a third class next year or giving something for second and third place. Again I think we will loose shooters not gain with the agg format. Gary
Was this at the Harry jones match 8 ?

I may be over stepping my bounds, but you can't take one sanctioning body (ibs) and have competitions for every type of gun. We all shoot ibs 1000 and benchrest rifles because that's what we enjoy. I'm all for adding a class or two but when you start changing everything to try to attract new shooters you lose your regulars.

You shouldn't changes thing but I think make more class has merit . But you also stop some shooters from being able to shoot the new classes also . If you don't you will have the same . Larry

Adding classes, whether it's a factory class or anything else is grasping at straws. Any of us that have been around a while have seen this tried in many applications. Adding a single class just doesn't attract new shooters. I feel the first thing you have to do is keep the shooters you already have happy. That means more rounds down range. That generates enthusiasm. Enthusiasm breeds envy. Envy was the driving force behind our growth for many years.

You are correct . But with respect I think you have it wrong.
As a shooter I don't Envy anyone.
Enthusiasm is only for those who have money and time to do it
The sport need more shooters.
If making more classes and not letting the Envy shooters to participate in them Larry

I think it is kind of funny that Reade range numbers are up with 32 for a monthly match and Williamsport is around 90 for a monthly match and both are using the shoot off format. I think you need to look a little deeper to see the reason for the lack of attendance. Jim
Why don't you think of something positive to help these guys arrive at a happy medium to increase attendance instead of saying this wont work thank you sir for your interest help solve the issues we have to keep long range alive an prosper for everyone in to long range shooting win or lose gives new shooters a opportunity to learn.

I'm not going to lie, envy is what makes competition. I envy the winners and that's why I show up, to have a chance to be a winner. Lack of enthusiasm and no drive to be the best is kinda against the whole point of a shooting match. I doubt most of us got into it thinking "man I'd sure love to spend every dollar I make and every hour awake to just go have fun". There's a sense of pride that comes with winning and competing

I agree with what you say Dave, The factory has gained a few and the tactical has been the same way, i dont think they will be the answer, i dont mind having them so people have a place to start if they want but it is not going to fix the problem.

You had too make me get in on this, But what if you had H.G. On Saturday. L.G. on Sunday. Know have H.G. have a shoot off For Relay winners for group and score. Then a shoot off fore best group and score for the day. That would be 12 Smallest group and 12 highest scores have a shoot off. That means you may have a better chance to win both ways. Then do the same on Sunday. My reason for H.G. on Saturday is our Club has less shooters on Sunday maybe that will help attendance.

The way I feel the only thing in life that matters is what we pass on to others .
THE fact is the shooting sport is declining. Without out changes it won't exist . Larry

I feel that our club needs a new class. We rent the range for the weekends we shoot. That means there is no general public around to see what we do. I hope a "practical class" will get more people to show up and discover Benchrest. Most shooters dont know what Benchrest is and a lot that do think its a bunch of grumpy old men with their pretty guns. Thats not the case here anyhow. Our more competitive shooters dont want to shoot agg based matches because the relay you draw effects the win so much. I dont blame them. On the other hand its hard to get shooters to come all the way here to shoot 30 record rounds on a weekend. I see both sides and dont have the answer.

Ok Alex and Larry I ask in the start of this thread to keep it positive with all due respect to you both go pee in another sand box this does not help us solve the problem .

Larry,
I dont know of any Savages that kicked butt when we measured groups on paper. If its the shooter at Manatee why did my girlfriend hold club records with my gun? She didnt even know what a wind flag was. Its more the gun than you know. Maybe that why you dont like paper, it dont lie ;)
No reason to lie where and when was the record set . I have shot 2 3/4 " in pratice and a few in the 3 " all in calm conditions .
The only record I see is the one Al Cummings shot with a savage .
I know you have the record at 550 yd on a gongs won that because you had more shells If you had more no telling what the record would o

I don't shoot 1k and two reasons one is the drive to get to a 1k range and the other is the limited number of shots. Add those two together and it just didn't make it worthwhile for me to travel 8-10 hrs shoot 30 and drive it back. So some how you guys need to figure out a fair system that'll allow more shots to be fired and not give the advantage to to early shooters with best conditions. That's where it'll get tricky I get that. So what if you allowed a continuation of sighter shots once you go to record fire? Wouldn't that allow a bit more fair advantage to all? If the conditions change and don't come back go back to your sighter plate and get your zero again. Then go back to record.

Williamsport is now only running 50-60 shooters per class, which is way down from 90-95 just 5 or 6 years ago

Just counted the 1st match, 10 relays of 9. seems a lot more than 50-60. Didn't check heavy just light… jim
