$1000 Hunting Rifle?

What is the most accurate/best rifle at or under $1000

In the spirit of the op question I will say this, I am blessed with a range of my own and have been here all my life, raised 5 kids that went to school here. Every fall there's probably 30 or 40 rifles sighted in here at my place from family and friends. Some fokes that can afford anything they want to the kids that work part time for 2yrs just to buy a $349 Savage rifle scope combo. In the last 10yrs I've not seen one FACTORY rifle that would out shoot a Tika or a Savage. Last October one young man bought him and his wife a pair of those cheap Savage combos in a 6.5CM and both of them would shoot under 1in groups with the cheap Hornady ammo. I've also seen the same thing with the Tikkas. It's amazing how well they shoot for the money.... John

.308s are generally easy to tune with a variety of bullet powder combos. Depending on what you are doing 155s and H-4895 have been my go to accuracy combo for paper punching and reasonable distance deer sized game hunting. IMR4064 and the 175-185gr bullets also doesn't disappoint for accuracy and hunting larger game or longer ranges.

This is true and I have plenty of Savages that shoot fantastic but the feel of a Savage is sloppy and cheap compared to a Tikka that in this day in age is only a few bucks more than the Savage. Savage is getting mighty proud of their stuff these days if its not an Axis.
 
Hands down the Sako M995 in your choice of caliber. Have yet to see one that won't shoot .5" or better at 100 with factory ammo.

Mine is a .300 Win Mag and will shoot Winchester 150gr power points .380" to .500" all day. My handloaded recipe shoots sub .5" as long as you want to shoot. My farthest deer yardage is 762 yards dead right there with Berger 190 VLDH.FB_IMG_1509861843587.jpg

Nice rifles, but under a $1000? Choice of caliber? there are 2 on all of gunbroker.
 
Savage. For hunting, 110 Classic is nice at around $900. Don't need anything extra, just scope it, and bed the recoil lug if you want. Solid oiled wood stock. Comes with adjustable LOP and cheek riser, nice recoil pad, good trigger, and if you talk to Savage they'll hook you up with a on/off radial brake that [surprisingly] works well. My 300WM shoots 1/2 moa at 300 yd with 69.5 gr 4831 and 220 ELDX's running 2793 fps with moderate recoil. Played around with N160 and 165 SST's and very easily got them to .2-.3 moa at 100 yd running over 3100 fps.
 
Tikka - but be advised that the lite models in calibers above 243 Win have significant recoil at least for little old guys like me. :(

However, if you can tolerate the recoil of a light rifle, Tikka would be my choice 100% of the time for a hunting rifle because out of the box they are excellent.

Here's my assessment relative to hunting applications:

Trigger - 5 stars
Extractor - 5 stars
Action - 5 stars
Stock w/ vertical pistol grip (after market) - 5 stars
Accuracy - 5 stars (w/ tailored reloads - can't comment on factory ammo since I don't use it)

Only potential negative is the polymer magazine - not sure how it will standup to heavy wear. Mine are all still going fine but I had a Browning X Bolt polymer magazine wear out in only one heavy varmint hunting season.
 
Bill Norris, I think that you may be right. But the jury is still out on the new 700s. They maybe be done right and there just isn't enough of them in the right hands to know yet.
 
What aout the new Mauser bolt actions? I have not heard of anyone talking trash or good about them. They are much less than $1000 and look good.
 
The fact that a savage is almost as expensive as a tikka is not a good thing for savage. The base tikki sporter is at least twice as good as the best savage sporter. They are better in every single way, out of the box.

Weatherby Vangaurd. Bit le$$ than Tikka. Nice two-stage trigger and good to shoot right out of the box. Wish they'd make left-handed models.
