100-yd Accuracy with a 1:8?

I am working on a 6br all purpose rifle- if there is such a thing? I would like to varmint hunt with 87-vmax, shoot longrange with 105 VLD bullets, and make small groups at 100 yards. I have read many times on this site that a 1:8 twist will “shoot them all” but how well at 100 yards? Am I too hopeful to want to shoot groups in the .1’s and .2’s at 100 yards with a 1:8 twist? Or does the 1:8 only start shining past 300 yards? And if you guys do get that kind of accuracy, with what bullet?

I have a 8 twist 6 BR that has shot a couple of .1s. However, it certainly won't agg in the ones or even the twos. It's not too difficult to get a .3 rifle but to get a rifle that'll agg in the ones consistantly is like chasing the end of the rainbow, even with a full race 6ppc. However, I have had several butt kickings by 14 twist 6BR bench guns.

Probably the reason that the 8 twist won't usually shoot small aggs is because of the increased rotational torque caused by the fast twist. It hampers the proper tracking of the rifle in the bags.

A .1 gun is a combination of many components. The stock must be right, all of the smith work must be right, the front and rear rests gotta be right and you must be lucky enough to end up with a very good, read exceptional) barrel. Then there's the learning curve of tuning the loads to the conditions that are present at the range at the moment you pull the trigger. The tune can and will change in less than an hour as the atmospheric conditions change. Spending hours practicing over your own wind flags is a necessity to learn what subtle wind and light changes can do to the point of impact.

I'm not trying to discourage you. Point blank accuracy and any other form of accuracy shooting is an addiction. Just remember, the first shot won't hook you..... bet you can't shoot just one.

Look down the forum to 6BR Imp., etc. under the thread " 100 yd challenge" and look at Bart's 3-shot group with an 8 twist in a Dasher. James

my personal best group (5 shot) at 100 yards was with a 8" twist .236 bore 5R Krieger shooting 105 berger vlds with varget, lapua brass, wolf srm, with bullets jammed .015 itl. group measured .117. that barrel also shoots 87 berger vlds real nice

I have had 6BR's in 14,12,10,8 twist, they all shot very well. I am setting up a Savage Target action with a new 8 tw 6BR barrel. I am going to use it as you are Varmints and long range, with 87gr. Vmax and 105gr VLD's. If you want to shoot small groups. Try 80gr. Berger with VV N135. I broke it in with 87 Vmax. They ran 0.250" groups, that is great for them. I have not shot the 80gr or the 105 Vlds.

Sounds like you want an all around 6br. Here's a simple observation. I see every day 600/1000 yard shooters posting pics of their fast twist 6br and dashers shooting .1's and .2's with 105gr bullets at 100/200 yards but I have NEVER seen a PPC or slow twist BR post any 600 yard let alone 1000 yard groups. Why limit your self or your gun. The constraints of the individual shooting diciplines will do that for you if you choose to follow one of those roads.

OK, me being a newby to some of this stuff, I gotta ask. It looks to me if it's .2 at 600 yards it's going to be .2 at 100. What I'm trying to say is a bullet at 100 yards isn't getting more accurate as it slows down. In other words, is at 100 yards it's as accurate as it's going to get.

If I'm wrong can you explain?

I have a .308 that consistently shoots 5 shot groups in the .2's and .3's @ 100. would this be considered unusual for a .308? i am new at this precision game.

jaredc,
Speaking for myself and shooting a Target Savage Model 12 6mmBR that I've been shooting for over 5 years and more recently replaced the factory 1:8 barrel (because it was loosing accuracy after 2200 rds) with a Kreiger 1:8 and have ONLY changed the trigger (because I hate accutriggers); I've been getting 5 shot groups in the 1's and 2's @ 100 yrd shooting Barts 68 gr Ultras being pushed by 29.0 (+.1 or .2) VVN133. Don't let people tell you that isn't possible because I've seen folks who compete (which I no longer do) do it in short distance (100 yds) competition.
