1.062" barrel

Hi guys

Can I safely install and use 1.062"X16 barrel in a 1.072"X16 Remington action?

Tks

A good reason not to f with the threads on an action. You will pretty much lose any improvement you were trying to get by messing with the threads. A hunting gun, clean and degrease and screw together with blue locktite just a little more than hand tight. A target rifle, don't do it.

I would, and I have, they seem to shoot ok but they are not high pressure stuff, 223,308 etc
I actually got a deal on a lightly used .223 factory barrel for a 700 and shot it out with 77 and 80 gr loads, shot well enough in 600yd prone matches

I think that it would depend on how well the barrel fit an unmodified action. If it was on the loose side for a standard action then that would be added to by .010. FYI, if the thread form of a 16 pitch thread comes to a point at the top and a V at the bottom, the height of the thread is .054. If we divide the .010 added looseness by two we get .005 per side. (V threads tend to center as they are tightened.) Of course barrel and for that matter action threads rarely come to sharp points so that needs to be taken into account when considering overlap. I am not telling you what you should do, just providing some information.

A .010 oversized on the pitch diameter would not be a safety issue.
Heck, I have taken Panda and Bat Barrels,(1.062 18 tpi), and established a 16 tpi on top of the 18 it to screw into a Remington use as a prairie dog rifle.

As to whether it would affect accuracy can be debatable. I have seen some pretty sloppy fit barrels that shot quite well.
Clearance is clearance. If tightened properly, a V thread will self center, whether there is .001 or .010 clearance.

Knowledge is truly a wonderful thing!
