1,000 Yard Factory Rifle For Less Than $1,000?

Most any name brand commonly retail marketed heavy barrel (target/varmint) rifle will do. I have a Remington 700 varmint/target in 7-08 that is amazing. I’ve got an old Ruger short action that I turned into a switch barrel. It’s currently wearing a Kreiger match barrel in 260 Remington 40* Improved. Just shooting Hornady 130 gr. match factory loads is a dime hole, 5 shot shooter. Haven’t shot it at 1,000 yet but no trick at 800 yd gong. It wears a $1,300 Leupold scope that has enough adjustment and range marks to not need a tapered scope mount. The 7-08 put 9 shots in a group that was easily covered by a gallon paint can lid at 900 yd. I’m sure there are other chamberings that will do as well and I’ve got several of them, but just something I like about the 260 and 7-08.

Rattle some chicken bones, burn some insense, put a hi dollar trigger on it, and pay a good gunsmith to cypher on it and get me a shootin' machine. I will pay 130 dollars for a beatup, cracked, wood stock, fixed with Elmers wood glue. Been thinking on this project for about five years. Then I will put a 1300$, SandB scope on that rascal.

Any and every centerfire rifle chambered in an appropriate cartridge is potentially a capable 1000 yard competitor. It’s entirely possible that a $10,000 custom rifle will shoot like a turd but in reality the odds are in one’s favor with a higher end (aka: more expensive) rifle.

Tikka CTR in 6.5 Manbun. They are $1099.00 at Europtic right now, and there is a $75.00 rebate. That isn't under $1k, but it is really close.

I have a CTR 20" in 260rem. One of my buddies found it at a Sportsman's Warehouse for under $700. I don't remember what it was now. My favorite factory rifle at the moment and very capable at 1000.

Yes you have totally misunderstood. As with any factory ammo you only get what you can find on the counter or on the web. If you just buy a super light bullet with a low BC and expect to win the king of Two mile with it you may be disappointed. Just because it says Creedmoor on the head stamp does not mean it is suitable for shooting a long way. As Dave says the Creedmoor is in fact the easy button, and most of the work has been done for you. But not all. If you were able to load your own you would have much more control than picking what is on the shelf.

OK, thanks ebb. Appreciate you taking the time to clarify. Fully cognizant of the self-imposed limitations of factory ammo. Told a guy at the range just today that I`ll never fully appreciate or know my rifle`s actual capabilities unless I handload. Even with that it was hitting a 4" gong at 500 yards with a factory load!

This was the very first Savage I bought, it is a 22-250. It's got 1700 hard rounds on it and getting a little long in the tooth when I borescoped it 200 rounds ago, but it still shoots good. I shot it last Wednesday, stacks them on top of one another at 325 yards. Every once in a while a get it out to 850 and pound steel.
It sits in a MPA Chassis. Hope to burn it out this year and put another 6br together for popping pdogs.

By the way Turkeytider Ammo Seek usually has decent varieties of Match ammo to be found. I buy a lot of 9mm and 22lr from vendors on their site.They do show Match quality ammo at places like Optics Planet and the such.
Those rifles I told you about earlier in your thread that I shot at 1000 yards. They all were shot with factory Match ammo. Hornaday brand, .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor. Not everyone is a reloader and I've RO'd enough PRS matches to see these factory rifles with factory Match ammo bang steel to 1000 and beyond. Will you leave some accuracy on the table by not reloading, sure you will, but not enough to notice banging steel.
I know you don't need me to convince you, you know it first hand with your 500 yard accuracy and your ability.

I have shot these, numerous ones in 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 at 1000 yards.
All with factory ammo, none of them disappointed me. Plenty of accuracy.

Savage has their issues, but one of them isn`t often an inability to put metal on target. I have 3 Savage rifles and have enjoyed them very much. Mine have never failed me.

To truly be hated on with a post concerning a Savage rifle ( and with the possible exception of a Tikka just about any factory rifle short of something like an AI ), you really have to go to Sniper`s Hide.

I got thrown off years ago because I had the audacity to suggest that painting a $4000 rifle in Krylon camo wasn’t a great idea.
