1,000 Yard Factory Rifle For Less Than $1,000?

A group of us used 4 tikka RoughTechs in 6.5 PRC this summer to have fun with and to teach a couple guys how to shoot long range. Slightly over 1000.00 but not by much if you shop a bit. Each rifle shot extremely well, came threaded and came with a brake. Some were used with suppressors, some with the brake and some were used with a threaded cap for hunting season. I was loading for all four rifles, it didn’t take long to find loads that were .5 moa for 5 shots, single digit SD and an ES under 20 for each rifle. We were shooting them twice a month from 525 yards out to 1200 yards. We change the trigger springs out and the triggers were good enough to get by with. Two of the rifles filled tags at distance this fall. Pretty impressive rifles for over the counter factory rifles, all four of them did very well.

I have custom rifles for long range but I wanted to join in the factory rifle fun and was glad I did.

That`s pretty much it. At 500 yards, with my .223, I shoot mostly at 5" and 4" orange target dots painted on larger white steel targets so I can see my misses and adjust. It`s a challenge but great fun. Some days are better than others ,LOL!!

These posts remind me of my buddy and I taking our $290.00 HB savage, 308, pre accutrigger to the gun range. We found a mint condition Weaver T10 and jammed it on top of the rifle. There was a pretty sharp LE type down the line. He was shooting an FN high dollar heavy 308. My friend and I shot 1/4 inch groups till our shoulders gave out. That rifle will absolutely beat you to death. We packed up our rifle and went down to talk to the sharp guy. He did not want to talk to us about his rifle or how it shot. It was hot as shit in DFW that day. We were dripping wet and our shoulders were blue. But we had us a shootin' machine!

I don't remember how much we paid for the Weaver T10. maybe 150-175. I still have it. really super quality. fine cross hairs, it looks serious as a heart attack.

Most any name brand commonly retail marketed heavy barrel (target/varmint) rifle will do. I have a Remington 700 varmint/target in 7-08 that is amazing. I’ve got an old Ruger short action that I turned into a switch barrel. It’s currently wearing a Kreiger match barrel in 260 Remington 40* Improved. Just shooting Hornady 130 gr. match factory loads is a dime hole, 5 shot shooter. Haven’t shot it at 1,000 yet but no trick at 800 yd gong. It wears a $1,300 Leupold scope that has enough adjustment and range marks to not need a tapered scope mount. The 7-08 put 9 shots in a group that was easily covered by a gallon paint can lid at 900 yd. I’m sure there are other chamberings that will do as well and I’ve got several of them, but just something I like about the 260 and 7-08.

Buy a beat up, flat top, pre accutrigger, Savage 110 or 112 etc, almost doesn't matter. buy a quality heavy barrel, per the instructions of one of the guys on here, then have another competent buddy install the prefit barrel. get it 6.5 xyz or 6.5 CM and buy 6.5 CM Match Hornady. that should easily get you done. you may have to do some major favors for your buddy who is going to do the barrel swap for you. Or, just buy a clean Savage 308 or 243 'police' etc model, pre accutrigger, work on some loads and good bullets. I think it will hit steel at 1K. I would probably pick a HB 243 as described above.

Why would you try and find an older savage flat top before the accutrigger ? Was they made back when people cared about their work ? I have a few newer era savage rifles wondering if I need to look for a oldie

personal experience. I have one 7-08 and 308. HB, extremely accurate. The triggers can be adjusted pretty well. Lots of the old heads on here can talk about the trigger.

Pull the 223 barrel and bolt head off the LRPV, replace the bolt head, and replace the barrel with a 6.5cm I guess since you want factory ammo and that is very plentiful. A 308 would be an option too but more recoil. Wouldn’t be my first choice but since you wanna use factory ammo they would have a lot of options.

A lot of cartridges will reach 1000 easily. How accurately depends on alot more than just the cartridge you choose. That’s just the start.

If you’re wanting another whole rifle instead of ripping apart the 223, the Savage LRP would be a fine choice.

Thanks. I have to confess that my original question/inquiry will become a serious issue if/when my club range expands from a max 500 to 1,000 yards. There`s talk of it, but right now it`s only talk. I`m just trying to do a little " background research " when/if it becomes a reality.

As for rebarreling and replacing the bolt head, that`s possible of course, but I have so much fun shooting the LRPV as a .223 I`ll probably just leave it as is!

Following the advice of a good friend, I rebarreled my savage model 12 several years ago to a 6 br Norma. Shooting 600 yards Br the little cartridge did not disappoint, eventually moving to 1000 yards Br I had some reservations but again the little cartridge shot extremely well. Super easy to load for and we’ll within most guys budget.

I have one in 308 and it has served me well.

I have shot these, numerous ones in 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 at 1000 yards.
All with factory ammo, none of them disappointed me. Plenty of accuracy.

The plus on those two calibers is that factory ammo is going to be $10 cheaper a box than the 6.5 PRC variety.

New barrel and bolt face for one of the savages. If you are not going to load, get a 6.5 Creedmoor, as the available factory ammo for a 6.5 Creedmoor is better and more plentiful than most other chamberings. Get a 20 or 30 moa base I like EGW. And get a good scope with plenty of elevation adjustment. I like Nightforce but others are good and many are more affordable. Find a load with 140 grain bullets that your gun likes and stick with it. learn to use JBM ballistics . JBM will tell you how to get really close to the target without wasting too many shots.

This setup far exceeds the $1000 limit. This is why I say it’s virtually impossible to do anything scoped and stay under $1000

Shooting long is fun. And there's several "off the rack" factory in rifles that will shoot long. Just be sure to choose a caliber brass that's big enough to hold enough powder to pust the freedom seed to distance. And that the seed is heavy enough to not get blown all over before it gets to its designated tgt. Simple. Go get em .
