06 family

7mm-06, many years ahead of the .280 Rem. Also .22-06 (somewhat overbore), 6.5-06, .375-06 Ack. (need the Ack. version here for headspace) and the ever popular 8mm-06. And of course, all the Ackley versions. My favorite for LR sling shooting is the 6.5-06 Ackley, made with Lapua .30-06 brass.

I forgot about the 280! And the 6.5/06 seems popular. I briefly looked into the 375/06 AI , I had a 375 McGowen barrel but someone else wanted it to build a 375h&h and I put that money towards the 6mm/06 build.
I am already hearing it about the 6mm 06 being overbore and a barrel burner. I can’t imagine a 22/06!! Though I am curious .

Dont forget the 400 Whelen. The Ackley shoulder is not really needed for the 375 if chamber, dies are dimensioned properly.

Yep, that's a good cartridge battery you've got .

I have a thing for 06 based cartridges too. I'm in the process of putting a similar collection together. I currently have:

  • 6mm-06 WTO switch barrel on a Defiance Classic action with a .338-06 barrel on order. Manners Classic stock
  • .25-06 fast twist Bartlien barrel on a pre-64 Model 70. Currently being stocked by Piper Rifles in Turkish walnut. Should have it back in a couple of weeks
  • .256 Newton (original Newton rifle). Barrel is rough and doesn't shoot well, but i like the rifle.
  • .270 - JC Higgins 51(?) FN action
  • .30-06 -Several including a Remington M720 and Remington M30, Win 95
  • .30-06 Imp - Post 94 Model 70 Control Round Feed Super Grade
  • 8mm-06 K98k (S42 code) sporterized in a Turkish walnut stock by Piper Rifles (leaving for S. Africa with it on Sunday). 192 gr Hammer bullets and Varget. 2800 fps
  • .338-06 switch barrel (will share an action with 6mm-06)
  • .35 Whelen on a double heat treat 1903 action. Swift bottom metal

I guess i should find a .280, .280 AI and maybe a .375 or .400 based wildcat to complete the collection.

Been playing with a Douglas barreled Mauser 8mm 06 AI for a while.
200 grain Nosler comps @ 2600 fire forms in single holes...
Whippy little barrel puts the first 2 into one ragged hole, then all bets are off.....
I'll see if I can get a photo tomorrow if anyones interested..

A 22-06 sounds like a 220 Swift...?!
Years ago when there were boat loads of 8mm Mauser military surplus rifles about, an 8-06 conversion was all the go as the gunsmiths apparently just ran in a 30-06 reamer that cleaned up the Mauser chamber and away you went... Lots of 30-06 brass around but not much 8mm Mauser ammo aside from WII ball.
The 8-06 was able to load up hunting bullets in that caliber and it was good for anything up to a moose.

That's true, but the point was, a .220 Swift is not a 6-06, which was the question Fire Doug raised. It's much closer in capacity to the .22-250 and about the same capacity as .22-250 AI.
