Rifle Suppressor Question

I appreciate all the comments. I've about come to the conclusion that I really don't want to modify any of my Coopers, but may have another rifle in mind if/when I decide to go the quiet route.

For the amount of shooting I do in a day in the rat patch, barrel heat would be a real factor. But a suppressed rifle would be appropriate for one specific area I shoot rockchucks with the much slower rate of fire. At present though, I just don't think it's worth the cost and effort, when I've shot my un-suppressed rifles there for years without any complaints from local residences.

Thanks to all who chimed in, but I think this project is officially on the back burner for now. My Coopers are in no danger of seeing a lathe anytime in the near future.
im pulling barrels this week and getting ready to send them out to be shortened and threaded. My preference is 20"-22" since most my cans are in the 6" length range

If anything costs seem to be coming down with the printed cans.
That would be very welcome news.

Ray (youtube \@XRING) has some recent videos on them, well worth watching even if those are targeted at AR type weapons, I was focused on the technology.

You’ve got companies like Dead Air that have started printing but have kept the same pricing as the cans they are replacing but we’ve got new startups with some great printed suppressors that have cut costs below those like Dead Air. They’re out there.

Threaded here is 125.00. wait time was 4 days right when ATF made changes around first of year. May have got it sooner but ordered just before 1st of year so had long weekend. Many of brands At Scheels are at 1k or little less with a few at 1200-1400.00. Cans will heat up on a 22-250 imp.
Waiting on my 221 f.b. get back from gunsmith, it will be a real hoot with can on it.

I will be sending a Cooper off next week to SC for threading. They do a lot and have some high end looking equipment for the job, reviews are good and return is reported as being quick.
Follow up on Cooper threading at SC. All went quick and well. A stainless thread protector was added and not a mark on my barreled action. Put the gun back together and other than adjusting the scope, groups were about 1” lower with the can attached. This was on a 6x45 and a Banish 30 can.

I recently jumped into the suppressor world.
Tax stamp was 0$, wait was four days.
Got a 36 caliber can, I can shoot my 22 arc and 9mm ar without any ear protection and it’s wonderful.
Really excited to try it on my 6bra.
I can thread my own barrels so that’s not an issue.
I use plan B/rearden mounting system.
So had to buy those mounts but I plan on making my own soon.

I went with a low back pressure 3D printed model and I had to make zero adjustments on my gassers.
I’m really happy with it.

Eventually I’d like to get a can for my 7mm and possibly my 338 as they have suppressors with brakes now.
Still researching that, in no hurry.

Rick,

If you thread another rifle for a can I suspect you'll be hooked and lose all apprehension about threading your Coopers .

I've fired 350+ rounds in one day from my suppressed Vartarg PDn, cleaned 'er up and started over again next day....no more issues re: overheating with the can than without....just gotta pace it.

I've fired nearly 2000 rounds through a can without cleaning it in a single PD trip. It takes a threaded pusher or special purpose rod to remove the baffles after that many rounds but the tube and baffles still cleaned up to bare metal in a sonic cleaner bath.

If you really care about the ears of the ground squirrels, you should use a can! I understand not wanting to thread the Coopers however. I have a L461 varmint .222, that won't get threaded for that reason. I have a TBA ultra 7 for my bolt guns and a Huxwrx Ventum 7.62 for my gas guns, as I don't like to eat cancer gas from the backpressure. I don't know if you ever shoot a .17HMR , but rf cans are reasonable and very effective also.

moorepower, I know you said that in jest, but all my rat rifles are what I'd term "nicer rifles" and I just don't want to thread them, same for my Sako's. I know I'm an old dog, but this is a new trick I just don't feel the need for. I shudder at the thought of threading my Ruger No.1V in 223!

I've been at this seriously since 1968 without using any cans, so at this stage of life, I just can't see a suppressor in my future. There's really no need for quiet in all the places I shoot, and I've got plenty of good ear protection. Besides, it's just one more thing to clean and maintain.

I do appreciate all the comments and input though; both positive and negative. :)

I believe Ambient Arms is the self cooling suppressor. I’m actually thinking about trying the one for 22lr before buying a .556 for $1300

I totally agree with you there. I have never had the opportunity to shoot GS, like you have available. PDogs react to sound much more apparently. In my youth, we had a 40 acre dogtown, 1/4 mile from my house. When shooting my .22H, I could get off 15 shots before they were all staying down. When shooting a .223, you were lucky to get 4 shots off. This June will be my first trip out with the can's for PDogs, but I think it will allow for much more shooting. I'm hoping to find a contact in Utah, so I can make a trip out there for GS in the next couple of years.

moorepower1, you're right in that prairie dogs will bail when the shooting starts; seen it myself many times. The joy of shooting GS's is the fact they are about the most stupid animal on the planet, maybe next to a chicken. Loud rifle fire doesn't seem to bother them either.

One more than a few occasions, a squirrel will get launched and come down in a complete organic mess. The others nearby don't seem to be bothered by the event but will stop their grass munching and come over to dine on the fresh meal their companion just provided. I wonder at times what the animal IQ equivalent is for these critters. It can't be much more than a turnip.

Best of luck on your upcoming June pd shoot, same for your hopes for a Utah trip for GS's. I'm certain the use of cans will increase your shooting cadence on the dogs.

Friday/Sat I put out deer mineral and freshened up rope rubs. Had my 22 pcp with digital NV with. Stopped at a hog building compost bin about 9:30 pm to shoot rats. After tearing my day pack apart I realized I had left my illuminator at home. Pulled the 20p AR with thermal on it to see if any rats were around, saw 7 moving. Decided I was there and wondered what a 32 vmax would do to a rat at 25 yards. Running a suppressor so I also wondered how the rats would react at close range. A almost rabbit size one appeared on a hog carcass, paused for a bit too long and was vaporized. It took almost 10 minutes for more rat activity, again I waited for a full view/stationary rat. Mist. 5 more minutes I shot a 3rd. Decided the air rifle was more fun with NV, than close range thermal mist. I think the suppressor shortened the wait time for rat movement to resume. Looking for an air rifle suppressor from next rat shoot.

Once you start shooting suppressed you dont wanna go back. The way it changes the report of the rifle and concussion is great. Buy a tikka t1x 22lr and a rimfire can. Subsonic is quieter than a pellet gun. Its fun. I've got a few different ones and love em all.

True!
