22 ARC Begins

I tried the StaBall 6.5 but wasn’t impressed at all with groups or velocity. I’m thinking TS15.5 for velocity and case fill. Maybe Varget but I just hate how slow the loads are before pressure. Maybe N540 will work

I am. I missed that. My 22 BR barrels all maxed out about 1 grain lower: 32gn for 90SMK, 31gn for 95SMK. I need to check my notes but I was shooting the 95 at 2950 below max velocity and can push the 90 SMK up to just about 3100. All that to say you should see a lot more speed than you’re getting before maxing out. My first rounds down a new barrel are always disappointingly anemic, but speed comes right up as I work up the loads.

I’m excited to see where you get with it!
I’m kind of surprised that H4350 works well in this cartridge. I would have figured it would be too bulky and slow. I guess I am always learning! Lol.

I have a 6ARC and I love it, so naturally I am eyeballing this cartridge as well! Just out of curiosity, would this cartridge have a liking for Leverevolution too? Or would that be too fast?

According to Hornady, 22 ARC like Lever and CFE223 much like 6 ARC. All fine and good if you aren’t after a temp stable load

IME, LVR makes good speed but I have not found anything with it that excites me for accuracy...fwiw.
I need to try 8308XBR in my 22Arc
It’s my fav for heavies in 223.
6.5 stable is showing promise, probably not ideal in a bolt gun but in a gasser I can get the speed I want and initial accuracy seems good.

CFE and lever get the speeds but accuracy was meh as was ES.

I hope to tryN540 at some point.

IME, the 8208 is just the opposite of the LVR. Great accuracy but pressures out before making great speed. That's in both a 6 Grendel and a 22 ARC/Grendel. I don't recall trying the 6.5 in either yet.

Yea
I’m thinking of trying 8208 with some 69smk’s just to see how good this cheap green mountain blank can shoot.

My main load will probably still be 6.5stable/80eld.

A small bit of data to add from range today.
18” Craddock RTR 1:7 AR. 70d 50RH 7SSE
Horn 2x brass .002 neck tension annealed every firing. BR4 primer, 80.5 Berger FB
31.0 Staball65 2736/14.1SD/5 shots
31.3 Staball65 2769/13.0SD/5 shots
31.6 Staball65 2799/11.7SD/5 shots
31.9 Staball65 2847/13.5SD/4 shots
Need to play with seating depth, and charges between 31.3 and 31.6 had similar POI and some accuracy potential. Still doing best on day/day is 80 ELDM and 29.3 CFE223 at 2830/7.1SD
More, as able.

My Craddock loves 80.5’s with N140 and 85.5’s with N540. Easy button!

That’s pretty decent speed for an 18”
I have a similar stable 6.5/80eld test to do with my 24”barrel I need to go shoot when I get a chance.

What is your definition of "a temp stable load"?

I have been shooting LVR in a 6ARC for over 2 years in temps ranging from -15* to 85* w/o any noticeable change. No change in speed, no change in POI. Appears stable enough to me.

Have you tried H4895 or ARComp? These two powders are doppelgängers… on target and through chrono they perform like identical twins but are actually two totally different powders. They do great with heavies without pressure issues. In the Grendel they are 3rd fastest powder behind LeverEvolution and CFE223. I found these two powders to be more consistent and accurate.

No to both in the 22 yet, but I only shoot light bullets from the 22. I have had good results with h4895 in a 6 Grendel with 80's

More data. Exact same Craddock RTR above. 75d 70RH lighter winds 1350 elev.
**80.5 Berger FB BR4 2.250 OAL
27.0 Varget 2704/7.5SD/3 shots. Small sample-I get it-it’s a simple reference point.
27.3 Varget 2742/11.1SD/3 shots
27.6 Varget 2785/11.2SD/4 shots
Nothing notable re: accuracy wise
**62 Hornady ELDVT BR4 27.0gr AR Comp
2.250 OAL 3058/5.8SD/5 shots
2.260 OAL 3066/10.0SD/5 shots
Notable accuracy improvement at longer OAL. Had to bump gas one whole turn for proper ejection, as had some short stroking with lighter bullet.
**75 Speer Gold Dot. Been chasing Aoudad, so trying a bonded bullet. BR4 27.0 AR Comp 2.030 OAL
2925/6.4SD/10 shots. Really good numbers, but a more full choke looking target. Too bad-might play some more to see if accuracy possible. Looks like a short version of a light bullet 22-250 load.
