22 creadmore verse 224 clark

If you want speed in a .22 wildcat, a straight 22-243 is crazy simple and pretty quick…and lots of good brass choices too.

If it was my choice I’d go with a 6 SLR. Another easy to form wildcat but better barrel life and better bullet choices…

FWIW,

MQ1

Are you stuck on those two choices?
The 22 Creed is getting out dated. LOL. Better choices now.
22 Dasher
22 BR, BRA
22 GT
Others that will get you the speed and maybe a bit more barrel life.
The 6mm's with get it done with light bullets and a bit more barrel life.

If you want one of those two, then go for it. Then you can say you did it.
Been there done that. Learned a lot. I will never go back to the 22 Creed myself.

But between those 2, the 22 Creed would be the easy button.
Good brass and info on loads.

I wanted a new build to do this spring, just had a 22-250 ackley barreled last fall and decided on building another one. LOL Did some research on 22 creed and even looked for a donor rifle chambered in one, not much there on what I wanted. Nephew had a 6.5 creed and sold his he didn't like his much. maybe they good for paper and deer.

thoughts on this for a long range ground hog round .what would you choose
Few things to consider. Are you building this on a short action and what weight/s bullets do you intend to shoot? Based on you 're asking about these for LR ground hog shooting is it safe to assume your intend on shooting the 75+ grain bullets?

The 224 Clark has a some case capacity advantage over the 22CM but if you were to build both on a standard short action depending on the particular action you use and what aftermarket longer magazine boxes are available for the action you use if you use it as a repeater and don't single feed the rounds the case capacity of the Clark gets neutralized because you'll have to seat the bullets deeper in the case to get them to feed through the magazine. I have a 224 TTH which is a near twin to the 224 Clark that is built on a SA Rem 700 and I had to install a Wyatt's 3.0 mag box to use it as a repeater and that was with 75gr Berger's the 80-80+ grain bullets are even longer. If you build one on a SA Rem 700 you could have a 3.100 Baney mag box installed but it'll require a little bit of machine work to the action. Either building one on a medium custom action or probably the most cost effective would be to find a Tikka 270 or 30-06 and use it as a donor action.

For me the two biggest advantages for a 22CM over the 224 Clark or TTH would be brass quality and useable actions definitely favor the 22 Creed. If you want more velocity then a 22CM I'd look at either the 22-243 or one of the many different versions of 22-243 Improved. I have my gunsmiths version of a 22-243 improved that's built on a SA Rem 700 w/3.00 Wyatt's mag box and I'm shooting ELD-M 80's 3650.

i got a stolle action but may use a 700 short and a number 6 barrel contour at 26 inch long.the 60 to 75 grain will work fine and looking at a 1 in 12 twist or a 1 in 10 twist.

My 22 CM is the best coyote rifle I have ever had with 80.5 gr bergers at 3400. I have killed several past 500, wasn’t possible with short fast bullets. It fits short actions with the long bullets, good brass.

I had (2) 22/243 AI’s and the last barrel went at 740 ish rounds. Just had a 22CM chambered in an 8 twist .219 brux @ 26”. First 9 shoots out of the gun with 80.5 Bergers. It’s the easy button for sure. 42 grains of H4350 was 3501 with an ES of 6 for the 7,8,9th shots.

The 22-243AI gets the velocity nod by 70 ish fps but I’m just not convinced the juice is worth the squeeze esxpically for a varmit rig that’s Gona get 300 plus rounds in a season.

People say the creedmoor is “gay” but there is nothing gay about a 80.5 Berger at 3500 that goes through the same hole.

One of the first things I consider when building a new rifle is what good brass is readily available and does it fill my needs. All of this discussion on fast 22s has got me thinking about how the new 69 ELD-VT would do in a 22 Creedmoor. I have heard that they are fussy if pushed too fast but would love to hear real world experience from those of you that have one. I would think on chucks and coyote sized game they would absolutely be incredible. As much as I love my 22-250s and .220 Swift I've been thinking perhaps brass for this Creedmoor may be around for awhile. Time will tell, hopefully it has as good a run as the 22-250 and Swift did. Sometimes I just wonder what the next latest and greatest new round they will want us to buy will be and how long it will stick around. Perhaps it's time to try one if im not too late like I usually am. ;)

My 22/244 CSK (22/6mmRem AI) shoots phenomenal. Killed groundhogs 1100 yards and shoots 1.25” groups at 500 yards with ES of 16 at 3700 fps with 80 gr Sierras. Impressive trajectory, speed, accuracy. Don’t shoot fast and get it hot though

22 creed is a very good cartridge
seems like most on this forum don't like anything to do with the Creedmoor
I get it new guy stepping on their toe's but that doesn't have anything to do with anything you ask
personally can't comment on the Clark don't know anything about it
but the 22 Creed will surely make your task and easy one

22-243 is nice but it falls along lines of over bore. unless you pushing heavy bullets through it.
Based on the original question posed by the OP, I’m making an assumption that most every cartridge in this discussion will be overbore…even pushing the biggest bullets you can stuff in them. From where I sit, I think that is part of the calculus in his ask.

Probably the most accurate varmint cartridge I ever had was a 22-243AI pushing a 75 A-Max bullet @ 3,670fps from a Lapua case with RE22. I've got a target here somewhere that came in at .625" @ 600yds. Killing fat PA groundhogs out to 1,000yds really made my day.

I was in the anti creedmoor camp for a long time until I got one.

The 22 creedmoor is going to be a huge hit with brass available for years to come. I'm thinking about a 22 creed barrel when the 6 burns out.

I have most of the calibers mentioned.
22-250
22-250 AI
22 Creedmoor
22-243
220 Swift
22-6MM
22-6MM AI
And I'm having a 220 Swift AI built and should be done before summer.

I have a 22- 280AI I have yet to shoot.

When going out calling Coyotes I grab the 22-6MM AI. It's the fastest rifle I own. They all shoot equally as well. I shoot Sierra Blitzking 50 or 55 gr depending on the rifle. I build a 22 caliber rifle for speed. If I want to lob a round I grab a 6.5 x 284 as I always have one setting in the pickup.
