Which 6mm for 1K?

Then why did they invent the dasher, bra etc?
I suppose that is a fair question.
The first dasher was 22. Dowling is a short range benchrest shooter and he likes to shoot rock chucks and prairie dogs.

The 6mm version was put on the map by King Richard back when you had to have a 338 lapua mag necked down to 7mm to compete at a grand. Richard showed 'em what a well tuned 6 would do. The rest is history.

To quote an extremely good unlimited shooter from AZ, "I don't care if they crawl across the line, as long as they go in one hole."

I understand. Agree.

I think any given bullet drifts less going faster.

So when I make a bad hold, the slower it’s going the bigger the miss.

I will take smaller/rounder groups over speed any day. You will learn to judge the wind and if your gun shoots a particular bullet smaller, that may very well give you a better overall scoring advantage than a few extra feet per second.
Who’s saying that you have to choose one or the other???

What if, you can shoot a 105 class bullet 3100-3200, and it’s shooting as small as a br running 2850? Then what? At 1k. In the wind.

Speed, bigger bullet , more powder etc all help to cover up problems with conditions. Problem, is usually one of two things. One, crazy conditions as gusty wind or switch conditions . Number two is lack of shooters ability to correctly read and respond to the conditions. Been way to many records set and matches won too just discount cartridges based on the 6br case, improved or not. Also important for many, barrel life as you approach overbore. I will always take the Indian over the Arrow within reason. Example shooting a 68 gr. 6mm Bullet at 1000 yds might be a bad Arrow regardless of the Indian.

I agree with barrel life. I agree with the Indian/arrow. I’m just saying if guy one has a 6mm going 2850, guy two has one going 3100, they both are 1/4 moa shooters, they are shooting at 1k, they both miss a condition change equally, who’s missing bigger?

In 1000 yard BR. it could be the difference of keeping all the rounds on the target vs one or more off the paper for a DQ.

Totally an Indian issue. For starters I'm not going to the line with a 1/4 min gun. I have never missed the paper, yet. I think if the guy going for a bigger cartridge is doing that to save himself from your example is probably a deficient Indian to start with. The guy who chooses the smallest option is probably aware he needs to be on top of conditions to stay out of trouble so works harder at it. Now the fellow with the bigger cartridge wants to limit the recoil so he opts for a muzzle brake and the guy on each side of him has to shoot thru the wake. So you and I will just need to disagree on this one, lol. By the way, I always read your most and most often agree. The only person I must agree with all the time is my wonderful wife, lol.

How’d you know I always have a brake on?!?!

And you knew I’m a deficient Indian?!?

Dammit ya got me pegged, it’s freaking me out ;)

You’re in my head!!!!

Look at the equipment list at some of the big matches. 284 Win and variations are popular.
Depends a bit on what a person is shooting. Fclass the 7 Sherman Max and PRCW appear to be getting in the 600 point club more than anything else recently. Other 7s are popular as well.

For Benchrest the 6s (BRA and Dasher) are doing well especially for light gun class. Also a lot of good bullet options for 6s.
