That’s too easy AlThe right answer is the one that works for the individual. Get out and test it.
Good shootin'-Al
What happened to shooters going out and actually testing things for themselves? That's the true Easy Button. That’s too easy Al
At the Short Range IBS Nationals one day after shooting there was a seminar discussing many different aspects of shooting. Lots of info.
Of the 5 shooters on the Short Range panel the number that annealed was exactly.....Zero
But what do they know, they were all only Hall Of Fame Shooters.

Or go into a big dissertation about the in adequacies of the term “neck tension”.Pretty soon some dirt clod will throw out the blasphemous factoid that he only anneals/stress relieves/draws back to keep his shoulder bump consistent.....not anything to do with neck tension.
Now that's some serious fire and brimstone/Joan Of Arc/Salem Witch trials stuff.![]()
You just hit the nail on the head. don’t let the secret out'Annealing' is like the term 'benchrest'. It can mean a lot of different things to different people. Kinda' like "...hand me a kleenex."
I refer to what I do as stress relief or drawing back...which is the correct term from a metallurgist's perspective. There are highy competitive Benchrest competitors (note the capital 'B' ) that intentionally don't stress relieve ('anneal) because of how they run their tuneup.

Yep, brain freeze is a real thing. I Gotta admit it, this thread is better than the 100th rerun of "How to get rid of hard carbon". And Jimmy, I chuckle everytime I read your signature.Give it a second Dave and that will quickly get dismissed because it is “only” 100 and 200 yards.
We haven’t had a good annealing thread in a while. Isn’t the winter great!
And their shoulder bumpI’ve seen the difference time and time again and will continue to anneal. If someone else can get by without annealing, I won’t call them a liar, but I sure can’t see how. They must chase their neck tension non stop!

I keep it there as a reminder to myself to let the target dictate my decisions. And Jimmy, I chuckle everytime I read your signature.![]()

That's fine and may be the truth. Every disipline is different and that part gets lost in a discussion. There are many things that do not concern the short-range guys that are very important to the LR folks.
Just imagine what records the SR Guys could shoot if they annealed.
It wasn't for me and I'm not the only one to experiment with it, I'm sure. Everyone is looking for an edge.
And some like Busy Work, and that's fine also.

Now that you’re retired like myself, you’ll have plenty of time to test lots of dumb stuff we never thought of while working all day.Agreed. I have an annealer myself because I like testing. One thing that is for sure is that there is no set way to do any of this regardless of discipline. Even guys within their own disciplines do things differently than the next guy. Keeping an open mind and doing a fair share of testing is a good way to stay busy.
Generally all that scientific stuff translates to the target... My thinking is science provides a way to measure and REPEAT a process when proven on a target. That's just my thinkingPeople talk all this scientific stuff whats so scientific about a target?

It’s great !!
I don't think I will ever get a AMP. My buddy has one and he anneals for me. He did tell his wife when he died to make me a REAL GOOD DEAL on his AMP!!i have almost talked myself into an AMP— something that not long ago i thought Id never want.
Ha ! Good luck with that one , I do all the cooking now days and of course I offer my scheduling talents to help my wife through her day but I must warn others of the hazards of doing so as it’s not always well received.Lately, I have been testing the theory of vacuuming daily to see if I can stay ahead of the two Labs we have. So far the answer is no, but my sample size is small Jim.

For me, the "scientific stuff" is to have a decent understanding of what's going on which I find helpful with trying to figure out problems (like a flyer here or there). It's like the difference between a driver/owner of a car who has no clue how a car works and just wants to turn the key and drive vs. a driver who has a good idea how a car functions and can intelligently explain a problem to a mechanic. Both drivers can get where they want to go as long as the car runs smoothly, but when there's an issue with their car . . . who's better off?Generally all that scientific stuff translates to the target...
