tool bit/inserts for turning

Just that, I need to update my tool bit to something with readily available inserts. Be turning to a shoulder, ie; turning a thread tennon.. Prefer a 5/8'' square shank. Almost 100% stainless barrels..

What are ya'll using ?

Thanks much !

I use these on a Boring bar
The bonus with the boring bar, I can Turn, Face, or Bore all with one tool (More efficient)
I think it is CCMT 32.51 Inserts
Fabulous cut and finish on SS, sharp enough to make very fine cuts, will curl .001" material
-------------------------------------
For making narrow relief grooves behind a thread or getting a perfect square cut right up the the shoulder
I have found thinbits to be awesome!

I use a profiling VBMT diamond for probably 90% of turning, except for removing large amounts of material.
Reaches into tight spots, perfect for a quick plunge at the end of threads to eliminate the radius at the shoulder.

If I could only have one tool/insert it would be this setup.

I really can't recommend KC5010 inserts enough. They make a wonderful chip that shoots straight down into the pan, even at the low/moderate speeds I like to run and they leave a GREAT finish.

Just for clarity for others that might go looking for it that’s a DCMT3251LF insert in Kennametal’s KC5010 grade carbide. Calling out just the grade/coating will lead you to all sorts of tooling.

I do like that grade/coating as well and an insert I’ve been using for a long time is the Kennametal DPGT2151HP KC5010 inserts. Sharp high positive insert.

What tool bit for turning to a shoulder would those 215HP inserts be used in ??
Again, thanks much !

Personally, thats why I use something like this
I hog out most of the material with a nice turning tool
then sneak up on the last .005" to make a nice smooth sharp face with this.
It's like a small parting tool, but doesnt flex, they come in different widths like as small as .025"

I also find having a bunch of these 1/2" C6 cheap china carbides
That you can profile yourself with a diamond wheel
come in very handy for shaping your own profiles and provide an excellent finish
since they are all the same height you can swap them out of your tool holder and have the same tool height.
BTW - not all China C6 is created equal, I have found these Gold colored ones work great and hold up well
on our Stainless barrels, I have used them for hogging out and profiling.
While the blue painted C6 tooling act more like C2, so I would avoid the Blue ones.
Just my experience

Kennametal SDJCRF082D Turning Holder for DCGT2151HP KC5010 Inserts.

FWIW I finish the crown with these as well. That’s how nice they cut. Set it a hair above center running the lathe in reverse taking the cut on the far side of the bore pushing away from you.

The same inserts can be used in this boring bar.

Kennametal E08SDUPR2 Carbide Boring Bar for DPGT2151HP KC5010 Inserts.

I have a precision Matthew’s 1236t lathe with a BXA tool post. I need an inside left hand thread tool for truing up receiver threads in reverse.

What do you recommend with carbide inserts?
