A tale of woe with a great ending

My pilgrimage to Lodi last month was a little stressful. I managed to dump cleaning chemicals into my trigger which caused it to lock up and prevented me from finishing. While I was packing my belongings into my vehicle on departure day, I was surprised to hear my rifle falling from the cart and dropping on the ground. It was in a soft bag standing up and it fell over landing on its back.

Several days later when I got home, I pulled the rifle out of the softcase to properly clean it and put it away and I noticed that the sunshade of my Majesta was weird. It was no longer round, and it had separated a little bit from the main tube at the stop. I tried to take it off and discovered it was jammed tight and would not come off. At that time, I remembered that the rifle had fallen, and my guess is that it landed on the sunshade, which I leave on all the time. There is no padding in the bag at that location, just the zipper.

I now had visions of the riflescope being affected. I pulled out my green laser and placed it on the muzzle and sighted through the scope in my garage. The sight picture looked proper for that distance (about 20 feet.)

A few days before the next monthly match, I took the rifle to my local range and set up my thermometer target at 100 yards. Back at the firing point, I set up my rifle and spotting scope. Bore-sighting showed that the scope and barrel were looking at the same target. I fired 1 round, and the spotting scope showed a neat clean hole right on the line where the bullet hole should be when holding on the target marks at the bottom. So far so good.

On Sunday, I was on relay 1 and after setting up, I fired a round at the 1000-yard target. When the little yellow box showed up on the tablet, I was able to start breathing again. I was on paper…

In actuality, the scope was dead on where it was left off in Lodi. The elevation adjustment was predicted and that’s exactly what I got. I shot 3 matches yesterday without any issues. I cleaned the trigger the week before after watching a Youtube video. The trigger was flawless. The riflescope was working well.

During match #3, after my first sighter, I added 4 clicks of up elevation and got down to business. After 3 Xs in a row, I got a squeaker 9 at 6 o’clock, followed by a solid 9 further down. I elected to not touch the elevation turret to see if there was something wrong with the riflescope. The next two shots were the same and I was forming a nice tight group at the bottom of the 9-ring. Time to correct. I put in 4 clicks up on the turret and the next shot was an X. I managed to lose a couple more points to wind but the remainder of the string was just fine. There was nothing wrong with the riflescope. Talking with others after that relay, I discovered that my change of 4 clicks was not unique, somehow the conditions changed during the relay, and they also had to change the elevation.

I have not removed the sunshade yet, but the riflescope is working beautifully, and I could not detect that it had lost its zero through the ordeal. The March-X 8-80X56 HM WA Majesta is built like friggin’ tank, an Abrams, not a Sherman tank. The Burris XTR Signature rings are awesome as well.

I ordered and received a Lakewood case, made in Wisconsin and got rid of the old bag. The Lakewood case is awesome, the rifle is placed in it vertically and there’s great padding all around. Highly recommended, so far.

I should think so. You can customize the padding inside the case so I can see where you would thin it out for the wide fore end and leave it thicker elsewhere. You would probably want to put some padding under the fore end.

I saw two other Lakewood cases at the match yesterday. They were le longer model. Mine is 50 inches and fits my rifle nicely. The longer model is 54 or 56 inches.

Will the case accommodate a 3" forearm?
3inch Forearms and the Lakewood case is Golden.
4 inch Forearms and you are out of luck. I wish they made a wider version. I currently have 2 of them.
I have since switched to LRB's. Great cases!
