Help with scope base/ring selection

First post, long time lurker. I re-scoped a rifle recently with a CDS scope from Leupold. After mounting on low rings, and sighting at range, I find that I only have about 15 clicks of elevation up adjustment left in the scope. The scope has somewhere around 200-250 clicks available, and I used nearly all of them. Sighted in at 100 yards, I don't have much adjustment left. Is my only option to use a 20 MOA base to get these clicks back? Seems weird to have to use a 20 moa base in this situation.

A 20 moa base would make it worse. Are you sure the rings are 0 moa rings and don't have any elevation built into them.

The rings are just straight up leupold rings, no elevation built in.

You've got the adjustable rear base on the rings. Center your windage clicks and use the screw to center your windage.

Should release more elevation adjustment.

Thank you your service, I understand exactly what you are saying, but realistically how much more elevation adjustment will this release? I was pretty darn close with bore sighting. I don't recall having to go very far windage wise.

I've included pics of the rings, bases and scope, I'm still learning after 41 years, but I don't think i installed anything wrong. Rings lapped with a wheeler mounting kit.

What scope & model? 200 clicks is 50 moa and around half is usable, so 25 moa.

Are the ring heights the same? Have you measured them? How much lapping was required.

I'm not familiar with that style Burris rings, as I run 20 moa bases on every rifle because I have more elevation available.

it’s a newer vx-3i cds in 3.5-10-40, 1 inch tube. Yes it’s does have 200-250 clicks, but I’ve only got 13 left. All the rest are down. Mounting bases on the custom Mausers doesn’t leave one with all the same options as commercially made rifles, I’d have loved to put a one piece picatinny rail on it, but they’re hard to find in correct hole spacing. I’m conversing with Farrell right now to have one custom drilled. When I installed rings the pointed mandrels you put in to check alignment were nearly dead on to begin with. Not an abnormal amount of lapping to begin with, pretty normal surface stuff. I’m stumped. I may see if I can call someone at Leupold.

Yeah, I see what you're up against. If I'm not wrong, that scope has only one revolution w/zero stop, but should have way more (20+moa) elevation.

If you can't find a rail, go with the Burris rings with the inserts (if available) to get that extra 20-25 moa. Good Luck!

You must have misread the question. This problem (running out of elevation turret, or "clicks") is exactly why the 20moa base was invented.

The other option is the Burris Signature rings. I usually get both, just to be sure I am good out to as far as I might want to plink.

Is the rear base designed to go over the "hump" of an unaltered military Mauser ?

I have a TC Icon(integral rail), I wanted to try a Nikon Monarch scope(1") on it. I had a new set of Burris zee rings(inserts). With those rings impact was over a foot low and right. I had no off set inserts, rifle had not been that far off with Burris 30mm tactical rings and different scope. So I switched to some Leupold quick detach rings I had, never touched the scope adjustments, first group less than 3" low and less than 1" Left. I think sometimes you just get a bad set of rings, or as I get older I mess up on the work bench.

Thanks all. The rear base isn’t designed to go over rear hump. it’s been ground off, the front ring is larger than rear, so that step up makes them level. I will prob end up going to Burris moa rings or an moa base.
