My wife won 2# of VV powder of choice. I haven't had any experience with them. What would y'all recommend from experience for a 243 shooting 115 DTAC's? N160 or N560. I waffle back and forth.

Any of the 560 powders have a burn temp that is high and cause short barrel life, 243s are rough on barrels anyway so the best choice for me would be N160 or N165. I was typing as you posted Donnie.

Yes N160 and 165 burn cooler but they will also give up approximately 150 fps to N560 with heavies in the 243. It is a trade off.

Good day,

N-160 for short to medium length barrels, N-165 for longer lengths. N-170 will work and give great barrel life in 28" or longer barrels. Use a custom chamber where the bullets can be loaded long and take the powder charge.

Good choice. 2# will not go far. Widden's has it in stock for $302. Per 8lb. It's probably the best price right now. There's supposed to be a 15 percent increase coming from VV this month, it will go up in price.
we all knew that had to be coming

Good advice but a custom chamber is not the answer. A custom throat for your bullet of choice is what's required along with a throater and competent metal smith.

I have used N150 in 6BRA and now exclusively use N570 in 338 Lapua. I shot 5000 rounds through a Sako M10 barrel and accuracy was still good (sub 1moa). The barrel burning effect is of course load dependant as well as burn temperature. In my experience there is little difference in throat erosion between high energy and low energy powders.

I recently scrubbed a barrel and scoped it after 865 rounds of 6br...
300 rounds was N140
The remainder was N540
No fire cracking was visible.

I really don’t get the barrel hot, I mainly target shoot for fun in cold(cooler)temperatures, if I use n540 for 6br and keep the barrel from getting real hot, maybe it’ll last just as long as any other powder?
