7mm08 loads

Another word of advice!!!
DO YOUR TESTING THE WAY IT WILL BE IN THE FIELD!!!
ARE YOU TAKING THE LEAD SLED TO THE FIELD???
WILL YOU HAVE A BIPOD AND SLING ATTACHED????
ADDING OR TAKING THINGS OFF THE RIFLE WILL AFFECT THE TUNE!!!
TEST THE WAY YOU WILL BE IN THE FIELD!!!
ADVICE FROM A +50 YEAR BIG GAME HUNTER AND RELOADER!!!!!!!!!

I will disagree for multiple reasons......You need to take as much as the
human element out of the initial load development as possible. Find what
that barrel works best with, then out to the field.......Those targets that were
posted are marked, 50 yards. It's mostly shooter induced. And for all we
know, the trigger pull is at 10 lbs.

Read the targets!!!!
I see vertical strings!!! Barrel is touching the stock!!!
Doesn't matter the method of testing at this point!!!
The rifle is at fault!!! Human error doesn't matter!!!
It is still going to shoot strings until the rifle is fixed!!!
I've learned, as a hunter, bipod with squeeze bag, on the matte is better than the bench!!! A much more stable environment!!!

there is a little movement in the stock at the foregrip
Tupperware stocks will do that.....take a player card and slide it
under the barrel to the lug. Any contact ?? Repeat this by pushing
the stock in all directions. If it binds during this test, barrel channel
will need some relief. Also check your action screw torque. It should
be around 40 inch pounds for the plastic stocks. Check this first before
doing the card test.

"NOODLE STOCKS"

I believe we all have come to a conclusion!!!
The rifle is at fault and needs corrected before any more load development!!!
Solutions:
1. Restock the action (high cost method)
2. Bed the lug and relieve the stock/barrel (messy and time consuming)
3. Shim the rifle barrel up with shims in the lug well base and stabilizing and centering the barrel by shiming around the lug well!!! (fast, easy, and reversible)

No 3 is a fast, simple, and cheap fix at this point to check to see if the strings can be eliminated!!

What does the OP and forum recommend??????

Evening all , I started reloading 7mm08 for a savage axis2 22-inch barrel , using 150 grain nossler BT starline brass and federal #210 large rifle primers ,IMR 4350 powder I am running into an issue and thinking I have to start over load out 1-3 total of 12 rounds with barrel cooling between , (first run) #1 40.5 grains dropped a .81 group of 3 shot 4 was a flyer for a total grouping of 3.38#2 42.5 grains gave me a 1.24 grouping #3 44.5 (MAX) grains grouping was 2.48.Todays shots proved terrible - #1 42.7 grains grouping of 3.39 #2 43 grains grouping of 3 shots 1.81 shot 4 a flyer total grouping of 2.68 #3 43.5 grains grouping of 2.10.

I did try bl-c 2 powder at 39.5 grains grouping of 1.99+/- #2 41.5 grains (MAX) 1.77 grouping with a 2 in 1 (2 shots through the relatively the same hole.

My question is do I start over with IMR4350 and go .5 grain at a time as well as work with or bl-c2?

Again N00B here
Thanks
Kevin
Try sierra 120 grn pro hunter Spitzer flat base product 1900 with varget powder I've shot deer and bear with them they hammer them 1/2 inch groups all day from a stock rem 700 mountain rifle if you need load data pm me think its 44 grns with match primers.

Hopefully it is 2900, not 1900!!!!

I too am just starting to load for 7-08 - two different rifles. A friend and his spouse.
It occurred to me that the same Staball 6.5 powder that I'm having great luck with on my Creed, will also be perfectly in the zone for this cartridge. AND it's the new magical copper scrubbing type.:D AND, It goes through a measure like water. AND - it's' all over town at every store that sells powder. (often cheaper)
These are deer killing shells, and I've got a few boxes of Hornady 139 SST's to work with. If I can take the chronograph and rifles to the range and get sonmething to shoot around 2900 fps, and group 2 MOA -- we're DONE. and I'll bet we do better than that.

Frankly, since the powder shortages and trying different powders, I couldn't care if I never handle 4350 again. ;) jd

not strapped in

KEVIN, Please reply!!
Is the stock making contact with the barrel????????
I'm trying to help you be a successful hunter, shooter, reloader!!!
I believe you are experiencing some problems I had with my synthetic stocks!!
I know how to make the situation better possibly!!!
The rifle is salvageable!!!!
Lets examine the solution one step at a time!!! 1st step: dollar bill test!!!!
Together, with help of some of this forum, we can make that 7-08 rifle A 3/4" MOA or better shooter!!!

Words from a 7-08 shooter that had a 0.388" Major spread at 100 yards (0.124 true MOA) 7 shot group and could not miss sending golf balls over the 200 meter berm with 160gr SBT SGK in the proned , bipod position!!!! Not target bullets!!!!

Hold your head up Kevin!!!
The light will shine, if you let it!!!!

He is right here! The only reason I replaced the stock was the gun was beating me up!

Sorry I was at the range with a different rifle , I can slide a 20 dollar bill from the end of the stock to the/and under the end of the scope with zero binding and back again

Staball 6.5 works with Berger 168s pretty well. Alpha cases.

That is good news!!!
I've been thinking about other causes and have several questions!!!
1. Did you use the lead sled for that different rifle, and did you have any issued with that rifle???
2. Is your scope securely fastened down???
3. Does your scope have parallax adjustment and if so, was it adjusted and checked for the range to the target????
4. Do you know how to check to make sure the parallax is adjusted properly???

Need to start the elimination process!!! The lead sled, no lose scope rings or mounts, properly adjusted parallax!!
If these are not a problem, the flexing of the stock is possibly causing the strings!!!

Two powders that have given me great accuracy with 145 gr class bullets in any 7/08 that I have ever owned was WW 760 and H100V. JME
