Thoughts on the 6x45

I have a custom 6X45 on a 700 short action, Benchmark barrel, and Grayboe stock. Love it. Have dropped several deer with it with 85 gr Partitions, and 90gr Berger hunters using H335.

Criterion barrels are great for the money. I just bought one from Northland shooters supply in 6BR Norma as a MTU contour, Savage prefit for $400. No muzzle thread runs $325. You won't find a better barrel for 325 than a Criterion.
Jeff is sending you a Thumbs Up from Christmas 2022… You got catfished by an old thread!

I’m guilty of doing this before. :)

My nice 9 point North Dakota whitetail taken with a 6X45. H335 and a 85gr Partition.

Come on now. Everybody knows that those "Northern deer" require at least a 30-06 to kill. At least that is what I keep getting told.

Nice deer.
The one in my profile pic fell to a 7TCU shooting a 120 grain Nosler BT

I have one and getting ready to build another. They work well on a Savage action. Bullets weighing in the neighborhood of 80 grs or very good and works best with 8 twist barrels or better, like 7 twist, more fun than a 6 ARC.
Have to ask, What do you find makes the 6x45 more, fun than the 6mm ARC? I have little doubt that the 6x45 would be a fun little round that punches better than you might think. Just have a hard time recognizing why I would find the 6x45 to be more fun than my CZ 527 in 6mm ARC.

Abundant supply of 223 brass at every range where people mag dump their ARs that cant hit paper passed 50 yards.

My thoughts are that the 6x45 is a pleasant throw-back round that is ease to make ammo as well as convert any rifle (current production or vintage). There are dozens of different models of rifles chambered in 223 over past 75 years that only require a barrel swap to convert to 6x45. This conversion doesn’t require a gun smithing to open up the bolt face. There is no scavenger hunt to find replacement bottom metal or magazine for a PPC based cartridge, which might not even be an option (pre-1970’s production) or is so rare that costs is prohibitive…unobtainium. Also, most 6x45 reamers are throated for more common bullet weights (60gr - 80gr).

Don’t get me wrong for several recent builds (AR15 and compact bolt action) I have selected 6ARC.

Both cartridges are lethal… the most critical component is the skill of the shooter.
