62 grain steel penetrator loading

Loading some new bullets 223 62 grain steel penetrator Loading with hodgdon 335 hodgdon says 22.5 to 25 grains testing tomorrow fps and accuracy any loading ideas

The Hodgdon data I have shows a max charge of 24.0 for H-335 in a .223. That's for a Hornday 62 ELD-VT. They are not listing data for 5.56 online. Where did you obtain your data? H-335 is my preferred powder for .223 and my load is 25.1 for a 55 V-Max so your data would be considerably higher pressure.

I've shot some SS109 factory loads that would hold 2 MOA. If you get them cheap, they're worth slinging at steel for funzies. If they aren't cheap, there's no reason to put effort into them.

Also steel bullets are banned on most ranges.
GMCS jacketed bullets (Gilding Metal Clad Steel) are the issue with most ranges; the 62 Gr M855/SS109 bullets are copper jacketed. While this may not exempt them from a particular Range’s restrictions due to the “attract a magnet” policy; in my extensive experience, their propensity to cause “sparks” is significantly reduced by their 7 grain hardened steel insert vs the above mentioned GMCS projectiles.

Does your extensive experience include the damage to steel targets?

Also our range indeed experienced a fire which was attributed to steel ammo. Believe me, that experience almost permanently shut down our 1000 steel target range. It is not worth the risk here in the Western desert.

I agree I got 500 for $69 just something to try, just want to know what these bullets will penetrate just having fun.
They don't penetrate much more than any other 5.56 projectile. They had a specific penetration goal in mind when they formulated them, and it didn't translate to good penetration on anything else.

I've shot them in auto glass, steel gongs, etc. No different than any other FMJ in 5.56. They are guilt-free blasters. Sometimes when I load even SMK blems I feel like I shouldn't waste them.

I am not advocating their use on steel targets, Sir, nor using them on ranges where conditions promote the danger of igniting the surroundings as in your quite arid region.
I am merely pointing out the differences and mistaken assumptions about the variants.
On 500, and 550 series 1/2” armor plate, we have not suffered cratering or penetration from them. Like you, I would not shoot them on mild steel as they are likely to cause damage as you have witnessed.
Doug Casner is correct, the DoD brought forth the design and concepts to enhance the penetration effectiveness of both the M4, and FN 249 SAW vs the standard M193 55 gr FMJBT/wC bullets proceeding the M855/SS109 62 gr.
As for accuracy, not the pinnacle for X-Ring potential; the ammo we received from US Army channels certainly proved good enough for our Junior High Power Team practice at 200/300 stages when we had access to Scott Mountain KD Range on Ft. Knox.
USMC uses the M855 in the M4 to qualify all Riflemen/women out to 500 yds (or did), so adequate in accuracy for Minute of Bad Guy for sure. Bug hole groups, probably not, but for inexpensive plinking fun where appropriate, why not?

55gr will penetrate way more. That tiny little steel tip inside doesn't do anything. SPEED is what you want, especially in this bullet.
I need to get out to shoot 5,loading up some 55 grain and some of the 62 penetrator bullets shooting them at some metal targets try both see what fps I can get see if those penetrator is worth it, they were cheap 500 $69 I'll try to get 3000 fps see if those penetrator does anything
