what did you shoot today?

Had been watching the Howa 308 barreled actions on Brownells website for several months. One day a 15% off sale came up, and I figured they wouldn’t get any cheaper.

Hmmmm… then I needed a stock. Welp, I made one. The thought crossed my mind a few times wondering what if this thing doesn’t shoot… Making a stock takes a minute.

Went out yesterday and shot some 175GMM and leftover Speer 180s to get on paper and run some rounds. Looked promising. Went out today and shot some 175 Sub X over 8208 XBR. My first charge had some vertical, which may have been me. My second charge seems pretty solid. Have to see how it works out on deer if I get the chance this year.

Isn’t it great when a plan comes together? It’s hard to convey the satisfaction derived from making your own stock. Now you know.! Nice job!

Shoot an iguana at about 30 yds with Dads old Stevens single shot 12 gage (it's the one in the corner by the back door now). Put it over the back fence to see if I can get the coyote back there to expose itself. Coyote has neighbor's cattle spooked and they stay out next to the road to avoid it.

This is true.

I started smiling when the 5th shot went into the cluster. I think this short barreled Howa was worth the purchase. The stock turned out pretty much as I wanted it, stable, palm swell fit good, just heavy enough that that wooden butt pad isn’t killing the shoulder.

I going to take my 10/22 out and shoot it for groups. I just reprofiled the firing pin from the old indentation at 7:00 to the new indentations at 1:00 and 3:00. E.

Yesterday, I was on n the shop and set my son up w/ his new CZ 457 lh 22rf. Mounted a 4X rimfire scope, shot 7-10 rounds to zero the scope first. Then gave him some pointers, safety talk, etc and placed a 500rnd loose pack of ammo on the bench and said ‘shoot all you want’. Had a 2x3’ cardboard target with lots of aiming points marked on it. After a 150 rounds or so, 5 per mag at a time, I put some scrap wood block pieces on top of the frame and some dandelion flowers in some of the bullet holes for more reactive targets. Gave me time to get some lathe work done and he enjoyed himself immensely. Ordered a case of Necco wafers and I’ll let him design a bit of shooting gallery to keep the entertainment value up.

Thanks for the memory, Necco wafers were a favorite target maybe 65 years ago!

Had to order them as those aren’t found at a local store anymore! If anyone has any other ideas for cheap, fun targets please chime in.
Paint balls. Never a question about a hit.

Put them on golf tees at 100 for an enjoyable game. Paint ball golf. Fewest number of shots to break nine is the winner. They are .5 inches in diameter.

For rimfire, 25 or 50 yards, depending on the rifles at the line.

beer bottle lids, or spray the target with honey or meat juice...draws flies and hornets...go hunting! I am a fan of the swinging metal targets...ram, turkey, pig and chicken, as well as the stick on targets that "pop" when hit.

I like the paintball idea, he’d like that, metal swingers will likely done at the 60 yard berm…. And since the shooting window overlooks the garden, in the fall I’ll introduce him to thinning the ever abundant rabbits that visit every afternoon . I’ll update the ‘let’s see those kills’ thread with any luck. Great recreation for a 10 year old.
