Need input on a 6mm coyote build

I won a custom bolt action rifle, and I intend to make it a dedicated coyote rifle

There’s a whole slew of 6mm cartridges I’m interested in but have no direct experience with any of them. Whatever I end up going with will also be my first cartridge that I handload exclusively for.

I read about guys pushing the 62 grain varmint grenade around 3700+ and rarely getting exits. That’s the kind of performance I’m after.

6x47, 6arc, 6XC, 6creed, 243….

Let’s hear your input. I’m probably overthinking this, but I will likely never get a free rifle again so I want to make the most of the opportunity.

I'm not concerned with pelt damage or pass throughs. 243 AI or long barreled 6-284 or similar with more BC efficient bullets are what I like.

And that’s consistent performance? Most of my shots are 80-150 yards

Not a great volume of data yet. The few I have smacked with it went down instantly, and their insides were jelly. Between 200 and 350 yards.

I shoot a 6 AI with 108 burgers and another 6 AI with 90 gr tipped game kings at 3500 FPS, deadly on deer and have taken coyotes out to 700. The 90 grain is tough to beat.

Mine is a Dasher, 6 mm 105 VLD at just over 2900 fps should kill just about anything around here.

I like to think the best dog rifle is probably the 6 Creed. 55s at 4K for the closer stuff, or 108s at 3K for the longer work.

I've went through a pile of various 22s/6mms/25-06s over my 30 years for dogs, but I think I've settled on the 6 Creed for now at least...

I'm a 6 cm fan. My initial load is 105 hybrids and h4350 at 3150- 3175fps. Have a little experience with 75g eldx at 3600. Need to shoot that some more. Would like to try some 58g too. If I don't want to reload, it's pretty easy to find a variety of factory ammo. The hornady 87 and berger 105 ammo shoots very well.

I have a 6XC 10tw that I've used 75gr Vmax on groundhogs and coyotes. It's pushing them over 3550 fps with a comfortable load of R15. On coyotes I've never had an exit wound or had a spinner. Closest shot was around 90yd longest was around 300yds. I'd suspect that the 6cm would be pretty close to the same performance. JME. WD

Lots of great calibers for Coyotes. The one thing that trumps everything is "shot placement". My favorite for shots to 300 yds was a .22BR pushing a 40 V-max at 3850. Very rarely exited. If I had to take a longer shot I popped in my 75 A-max load in the same rifle. Both loads shot to the same point of impact at 100 yds. Kinda handy. The 75 A-max load was good to 500 yds or so, and was very gentle on hides. Good shooting and keep us posted.

For this particular purpose, hands down 6x47 Lapua, chambered and throated to use the 95 grain BT bullet of your choice. I would drive it with H4350 or Varget, whichever grouped best. But this is my only choice when you Coyote only build.

Ya lighter bullets are faster and flatter,,, till you hit over 300 yards, then the 95 takes over, it also has a huge advantage over the very light for caliber 80 and under weight bullets, those are only an advantage inside 300 yards. The 105 class are only of any advantage beyond 600 yards, but suffer inside 400 yards over the 95 grain.

For me the ideal rifle would be a 257 Roberts ackley improved with 85 to 90 grain bullets, which will give same results as the 25/06 more efficiently, but plan on heavy pelt damage!

Those are my only choice with the 257 my first choice, which far to many have not only no preference for, but also no experience with, the quarter bore is a far overlooked caliber!

I first posted the 6mm because most will never consider the better quarter bore!

You posted before my half of that post, damage is severe with the 257 not that bad beyond 200 yards with 6mm but shot placement can change that. But that is controllable in unknown conditions with both these cartridges shooting the weight bullets I mentioned. My opinion the sweet spot for both for shooting thru unreadable conditions, best for close as well long range trajectory, and controlling the damage you want.

The sweet spot if you will, ya light is good close worthless out farther, heavier is better way out, but a big disadvantage on quick shots without rangefinding at any range, especially inside 500 yards where most shots are NORMALLY TAKEN. Don't flame there is always 5% that can say I never shoot them over 200 or I never shoot them under 400, etc etc. This is my sweet spot for every scenario! You can't have perfect for both!
