New Rifle

I have a youngster I'm mentoring with reloading. Very sharp kid. Only 16 year old i ever met that has his own vegetable garder!!!
His folks bought him a new 6.5 PRC rifle. Upper end brand. Like probably a $2000.00 rifle. He brought it to the house to show off of course. Anyway. I asked him if he had cleaned it yet. Kind of through him off with it being new and all.
I was blown away at what we got out of that barrel. Anybody besides me think this might not be a new rifle. I've never experienced this before.
I have seen some copper residue in new factory rifles barrels in the past.
Manufacture did a test but that looks like way too much copper on the patches.
Best way to determine the barrel shape is to inspect it with a bore scope.

I sincerely hope you didn't burst the young man's bubble. :(
Absolutely not. My words were along the lines of this is something I've never seen before. Doesn't mean it's bad or good. If I were you I would discuss this with your Dad. The 2 of you make a decision if you need to contact manufacturer or not. When I pushed a patch down the barrel and it came out, you could see a very puzzled look on this youngsters face. He's no dummy.

Most rifle companies test load every rifle to avoid liability claims!!!
It called proof testing!!!
Some clean afterwards, some don't!!!
Long ago, Weatherby use to ship the three shot test target with the paperwork in the box!!! Some of those new rifles were never cleaned before being boxed up!!! I picked up 2 different Browning last year!! Took about 60 patches each to clean the bore of each rifle!!!

If its a new in box rifle, there my be a notices in the box, or in the manual, to clean the bore before firing!!! Some companies leave the fouling for evidence of pressure testing!! Others, state to remove the packing oil from the bore, which covers and neutralizes the fouling!!!

Check the paperwork!!!! Read the manual!!! There may be an answer to your question there!!!

I had the same issue with a Savage 6BR. Actually took the rifle back to the dealer and told him no way was this a new rifle. It coppered really bad after I fired it also. I shot some Tubbs final finish through it. Eventually got easier to clean and shot great.

If every patch came out clean the young lad would have probably blown off half of what you told him until he found out the hard way on his own. In this case, he’s learned a ton of valuable information as well as a life lesson first hand!!

On a side note, I showed Grant how to measure the chamber for overall case length for that particular rifle. SAAMI specs show 6.5 PRC max case length at 2.03. That chamber measured 2.07. Seamed a little sloppy is what went through my mind. Can someone enlighten me on allowable variation?

Upscale rifles are not immune from having rough barrels. I had a new Sako 85 223 that had a horrible barrel and they refunded my money.

You are dealing with a smallish bore that is going to foul quicker imo, especially with a larger powder capacity rifle. Is the blue due to using a bronze brush and a bronze jag? Was the rifle barrel broken in gradually? Really, best way to tell is to borescope the inside. Without that visual info we are just speculating.

As mentioned earlier, I don't use bronze brushes or jags. Rifle has never been fired by new owner

Interesting. A number of shots in a new barrel if not void of defects can foul a lot. Get your borescope working or find another person with one you can borrow. Good luck.

I took my Teslong scope to a Turners Outdoorsman to check out a Ruger American Gen 2 as I have never seen a Ruger barrel. It was between Ruger and Savage and I've seen plenty of Savage barrels. To my surprise all 5 "new" barrels I scoped had a LOT of copper in them and one had a dusting of rust. Another surprise was that the 2 Savage barrels I scoped, model 12 and Axis, did not have the typical chatter marks that Savages are known for.

I’m left speculating that the gun is a “return”. Sent back for “issues”.
That's where my mind is headed. If i remember correctly, his folks bought it from a smaller shop here north of town. His dad is a good fellow and very into hunting and outdoors activities. Heck, the dealer may have told his dad it's been returned or something for all I know. I'm sure I'll here back from him after church today
