6BRA load data

Grabbed some H4895 and looking to fireform some new brass (lapua). Looks like the fireform charge for h4895 is 28-29 based on what I read in this thread. Is that still a good charge to get get a good fireform? Have some Berger 105 HT and 108 bt with some cci 400 and 450s to round out components. Thanks all.

I agree with the others. Unless you are using your fire form loads in a match?

Don't waste the Varget either! I use W748 and it works great, and it's easier to find locally for me.
My W748 fireform load will easily clean an MR-52 target shooting slung up in prone.
New 6mm BR Laupa Brass? Fire forming to 6MM BRA?? Care to share your W748 Load? I have some W748 in the powder cabinet I'm not using for anything else. I could Save my Varget and H4895.

I wouldn’t even waste bullets while experimenting, use a modest amount any medium ish burn rate powder coupled with a soft cheap primer and stuff TP in the neck. Go out back or in the garage and shoot one round to observe and judge the shoulder formation. Rinse and repeat to get the desired results.
You’ll have some data at least
For me that would have to be a range activity... If I were to just pop primers and powder in the garage of my neighborhood house block the "Men in Blue/Khaki" would be knocking at the door with a nice new shinny set of bracelets...:confused:
An alternative today is just to buy some ready made cases in 6BRA.
Easy Peasy, though in the past I did form Lapua and Peterson 6BR brass. If I built another 6BRA I would just buy some Alpha ready made or form up the Peterson as I have had such good results with their brass.
Even though I am thinking of another build these days {I do have the reamer} I am leaning more toward a 6GT, that also has ready made brass and a club member recently started a new build at 500 for a 200.17 with 110 Sierras in a 1:7.5 28" with Varget {AR2208}... I was duly impressed!

Just this week I was fireforming and breaking in a new barrel using some Nosler “Custom Competition” bullets. They shoot so bad I had considered throwing them away but they were perfect for the chore.

If anyone else at the range was paying attention they might thought I was a maniac shooting 50 rounds in 30 minutes. Barrel got just warm, never hot.

I hear you about the Nosler... I scored a box of 500 185gr RDF 7mm for what seemed to be a bargain price during the "Great 7mm Berger Drought"...........
Absolute rubbish! 178pcs made weight and the rest were 1.5-2gr up or down! Did not even check base to ojive as that just would have been a waste of time. Even the ones at weight never grouped well...
Fire form bullets only...

Use your Varget and shoot it in a match. I’m also new to the BRA. I had a LOT of Lapua BR brass I wanted to fireform. It was unbelievable how accurate it was fireforming. Load with Varget and go shoot matches or hunt while fireforming. I had posted somewhere I used 29.0 of Varget. After checking records it was 30.0 Varget I was using. The shoulders were perfect as far as I could tell. It was in an Impact 737r action with a Bartlein chambered by Alex Wheeler sitting in a mdt chassis shooting using only a bipod. 10 shot groups at 104 yds were small enough trying to poke your little finger through it tore paper.

I acquired a Mod 70 in an Anschutz prone stock and a Kreiger 1/7.5 30" barrel in 6 BRA from the owner who had been letting me use it for MR/LR. Mostly 105Berger 29.8gr H4895 and a CCC 450 with Lapua brass.
Now that I have it am loading Varget and a SMK 107. .272 neck
I worked up 28.5/29.0/29.5/29.8/30.1 and 30.4 Varget loads touching jam.
Velocity was shy of 2800. H4895 had been more 2850-2890 fps with 105 Berger.
The prior owner had load notes using his varget at 30.1 and getting about about 2850-2890, but MY Varget needs 31.0 to get to get the 107 SMK to 2850. -.020 jump is the load I plan to use in a couple weeks for a MR match.

I have less experience with Varget so I guess lot to lot it is not the best consistency.

Just starting with N540. My barrel seems to like the Sierra 107 MKs, so running with them for now. This is initial charge ladder at 100 yards, 600 yds next week...
Zermatt Origin action, Criterion shouldered pre-fit 26" MTU 0.272"neck, 0.120" FB, Revolution Stock (not bedded, yet), TT Diamond trigger, Arken EP-5, Alpha 3X no turn 0.0025-0.003" bump, Wilson bushing die, 266 bushing, 450 primers, 0.008" IN - I did a seating depth test from +13 to -36 and it seems to like the +6 to +10 range.
Tell me what you see... (WWFCJD)
Thanks in advance,
Scott

Just hard to go past the almost universal load for the 6BR/BRA of 30gr Varget and Sierra 107's....
That 29.8 & 30 are real keepers...! Now for some 10 shot groups at 300yd & 600yd.:D

Did you get pressure signs at 31.4 gr?

Your 100% Correct Varget is like Red Heads Hot today Cool Tomorrow

Did you get pressure signs at 31.4 gr?
Yes - 31.4 was a fairly firm bolt lift, 31.6 was that plus a bit of ejector swipe, but no pressure signs based on the appearance of the primer - not flat, not cratered. To be honest, I get the occasional firm lift and slight swipe with loads in the 29-30 gn area -with both Alpha and Lapua brass, so I focus on what happens to the primer.
