Remington 7 1/2 bench rest primers?

At almost half te price of CCI bench rest are they a viable alternative? I would like to hear people's experience with them.

I shoot these cci450 and Fed 205 mar(bought while 30-35/1000) in my AR's, to save my Rem 7.5 for my bolt guns( even though I paid 17/1000 for them). Wish I had bought a much larger supply of the 7.5. And wouldn't have needed to buy the 205/450's.

I started using the 7 1/2's about a year ago and found they've produced excellent results out of my .308. I'd say, base on my limited experience, they're as good as any other out there and think you should not hesitate to try them.

I was actually surprised by such good results as I had previously tried the 9 1/2's and they produced awful results with loads that should have been good.

PS: Their diameter is a hair larger than others, which can be an issue when seating into tight pockets like one finds with Alpha brass. But if your pockets are running a little loose, these are a good one to use to tighten things up a little.

Tested the 7 1/2, 450, and BR4 with the same load on the same day, 10 shot groups each; 200.20X and Varget.
7 1/2: 2620 avg. 7.2 SD
450: 2612 avg. 9.7 SD
BR4: 2625 avg. 8.2 SD

Ive tested the BR4s as being higher velocity than the 450s as well.

I used them for years in a 222 Remington with outstanding results and for a time in my 223 Rem bolt rifles. I would not hesitate to use them for precision reloads. Currently I am using Federal 205M (match) primers in my 223 Rem bolt rifles, but the Remington 7 1/2 shot on par with these.

I work up loads with cci's to show pressure signs earlier due to them being softer then switch back to 7 1/2 after ladder tests

7 1/2 are the toughest that I have found and crater/ pierce last

I use a large amount of the rem 7 1/2 primers. I have had very good luck with them and have a large stash of them. A few years back i was checking a load on a 223 rifle across a chronograph and was shooting out at 300 yards at a steel plate. It was shooting good. For some reason i grabbed another container of loaded rounds for that rifle. At 300 yards it was low and right from where i was just shooting. I dont know why or how but i found that 50 rounds was loaded with the 7 1/2 and the other 50 was with 205. The 205 was 30fps slower across the chronograph. Group size was about the same.

Its the only small rifle primer I will use for BR, other than Wolf SR Magnums
Some people likely found a decent load with other primers and just never developed one with the 7-1/2 is all
or they're stubborn and like the sound of CCI or something.
7-1/2's give me lowest SD's, (if you're into that sort of thing) and don't pierce with hot loads

I use a lot of 7 1/2 primers for many of the reasons stated above. It seems like they'd be more commonly used. It may well be an "image" thing. Kind of like Herco powder. It was (still is?) a good powder, but maybe the goofy name turns people off. Regarding primers, I was talking to a fellow shooter about using 7 1/2 primers. He said "no offense, but it seems older shooters seem to like 7 1/2's." Heh heh.... guilty on both counts. He may have something there . . . .

I use them for my .22BR Pistol and occasionally for some of my .223 Rem 75/77 gr AR loads. I only have 2,300 left from the 5K I bought way back when from Gamaliel Shooting Supply ($75 + 5% tax at the time per case). I should have worked OT and bought more, but who knew what was to come for the entire economy.
I will buy more as availability increases, even though the price point makes me cringe.
Lucked into 1K of the Federal 205 AR, so will work with them for next batch of .223 REM heavies in a RPR bolt gun, and save the Rem 7 1/2s for the .22BR.
