Remington 7 1/2 primers question?

I am having an occasional Rem 7 1/2 blow out in the radius. Never at the firing pin strike. 223 across the course loads in an AR. CLE chamber, RL-15, Sierra 80 MK's & 300 ydload, H75. LC brass. Kept backing off powder, didn't seem to help. Previous carton worked fine. Remembered I had recently opened a new carton, different lot #.Digging on the internet, I found info ref this problem. Seems Rem went to a two legged anvil in this primer, which seemed to be the culprit. Not sure how long before they went back to the three legged anvils. Lot# 330 is my problem lot #. Am using them up in my practice upper with mild 55fmj offhand ammo. Still blows one about every 25-30 rounds.

Any one else hand this problem? Probably purchased at least 10 years back.

I had over 4k of these from my XTC days and never opened them. When I ran low on SRP a couple of years ago I broke them out for use/testing. I got the same blowouts that you describe. I found out that Remington made 2 leg anvils back in those days that were known to blow out. Check your primers and if they are 2 leg you can try to get them replaced with the newer 3 leg versions direct from Remington. I took pictures and sent them with a note explaining the problem. They sent me replacement new primers in about 2 weeks. Excellent service, especially since they had just gone bankrupt and changed owners........

I had heard about primer cup leaks in certain Winchester primers and also about this batch of REM 7 1/2 and luckily I had neither batch.
I have said it before many times, and I will say it again here as a reminder, that every single brand has had escapes ranging from the annoyance of poor performance, to serious reliability issues. If you live long enough there is a likelihood that you will see it again.

I havent tried these 7 1/2's yet I bought them as we were heading into lockdown in 2019 and I think Rem was going out of primer manufacture, I picked them up for $55 NZD when 450's were running at $99 NZD so I hope I got a bargain not a nightmare?!

I use them a lot in my small calibers. 17 FB and 20 VT shoot extremely well with them.

Some of the best shooting 6br's and variants I've ever personally witnessed were fired by Rem 7 1/2 primers.

Same with the 17 Remington and 17-223. JME WD

kiwijohn, easy to see the difference between a 2 legged anvil and a 3 legged anvil! Compare them to any other an you'll see the difference if two legged. Whats the lot number on yours? 330 was my bad lot. [

I remember seeing a test write up a few years ago comparing flame intensity of small rifle primers. The 7-1/2 was the hottest of all tested. Thinking tha might be good medicine for my 30BR, I tried them. So far, they seem to work better than others I’ve tried -205M, 450, wolf (35-ish h4198 in 23” bbl). Used 7-1/2 in gas guns for years without issue, as well. One thing for sure, is they take up a lot less room on the shelf because of the way they are packaged.

I have two bricks of Rem 7 1/2 primers from the late '60's early '70's that are 2 leg anvil style. My late '80's, '90's, and 2000's bricks are 3 leg anvil. Also have two bricks of Rem 9 1/2's from the '60's that are 2 anvil. I've shot multiple bricks of these old Rem 2 anvil primers that I bought at estate sales over the years and never had a problem.

Hi Frank, I am pretty sure mine are 3 legged, I dont think I have ever noticed a two legger, I am guessing they would have only two metal fold downs that go under the primer compound.

Well the CCI 450’s were $40 per thousand cheaper than the Remington 7 1/2’s so I bought several 450’s.

Great primers, buy them if you have the chance.

All I've ever used for 223 and 6.8 SPC. They work great. Buy all you can, and I'll take 1,000 off your hands.

In the closet are some copper colored 7 1/2s lot # 175 with 2 legs from a brick I bought late 80s early 90s. Also a slightly newer lot #297 that are also 2 legs but brass colored from around the same time. They all have been fine in various rifles from PPCs to 222 to 223 & 7mmTCU.
