Years ago at an IHMSA match, or it was at a GS with an IHMSA shooter. Sorry it’s been a long time I have slept and killed brain cells since then.

What I had seen was an action and trigger. Danged if I can remember if it was a repeater or SS action
 
I DO KNOW from the looks of it, if it was in a gun shop, fights would break out to see who would be taking it home.
Mighty pretty build. And the guy that built it was a Master Builder!! :cool:I could see that action in a pistol build, like an XP 100. ;)
Perfect for a lefty. Right hand free to work the bolt while the left hand stays in the "laminated thumb hole stock" for control. :):)
 
I'm guessing it's a customized 600 action. There have been several gunsmiths who have made shorter actions by cutting some of the action out and and shortening the bolt to fit. You can readily see where the bolt was apart and I think you could find where the action was welded together after removing some of its length - usually a slight difference in the shade of blue after being reblued. The trigger looks like a 600 also. I saw a Mauser that Rick Stickley shortened and you really had to look closely to tell what had been done.

If not a Remington factory job(maybe prototype), how does one explain the 1-XL serial number? Can one legally customize an existing receiver and change the serial number?

I would think the 956 number on the box would be a serial number or maybe employee number? I wouldn't do anything to it except run a few rounds down the barrel. Then just be proud to own it. Show it off to your buddies over a glass of whiskey.
 
No fun just showing it off to your buddies. You need to shoot it but, if you're like me, you won't shoot it much so you need to sell it to ME so I can stare at and not shoot it like I do with most of my other rigs now. STILL be fun to have, even if you don't shoot it. It IS COOL!!!
