I walked into the local gun shop….

and spied a Rossi Model 1892 in the rack. Stainless steel, with a 24 inch octagonal barrel in 45 Colt. I know Rossi has a cloudy reputation but the 92s are supposed to be one of the better guns they produced. With the dies and some brass sitting in a drawer back in the shop, I figured what the hell.
I’ve been researching the strength of the gun for loading purposes. They offer the 92 in 454 Casull, so it seems to be capable of handling the hotter +P loads.
I bought a couple boxes of factory ammo to start with and to get some more brass. The box states they’ll hit 750 fps. That seems a bit anemic.
Anybody out there load for one of these guns? Any input?

I have a Puma model 92 I believe there exactly the same as the Rossi. It’s the 454 but I mostly shoot 45’s in it . It’s a fun little carbine but there rough not nearly as well built as a Winchester but all in all it’s not given me any problems and handles the hottest of the 454’s ok

It was raining!….and YOU have a hand in this! I offered you those dies and brass months ago FOR FREE and you didn’t take them! Left them with me to worm into my brain. Who keeps dies for a gun he doesn’t own?

By the way: There was a very nice Anschutz 153 with double set triggers in 222. Had a scope on her, too. Think he was asking $800 or $1000 for it if anybody’s looking for one.
I resisted ‘cause I have enough 222s.;)

Somebody should take him up on that one. I have 222 covered but that sounds like a neat rifle, priced right.
 
Can't help with load data but can envy your selection! ;)

This seems like a fun gun to shoot and to live vicariously in the old West. Now all you need is a Colt Single Action Army, 45 Long Colt with a 7 1/2" barrel and a holster to make the system complete. This has always been on my wish list even though it was the 44-40 in the old West that was the combo system but the 44-40 is just too difficult to load for or so I am told. But the 45 Long Colt is close enough to simulate it. Have fun! :)

Sometimes it's not about shooting terrific groups, it's just about having fun! :rolleyes:

PS: I recall those days of walking into a gun shop with a reload component list then walking out with a gun that wasn't on the list (or a sale receipt for a new S&W revolver because in those days we had a 3 day wait for handguns). Impulse buys were an affliction I suffered from in my youth. :rolleyes::oops::)

Right after I moved down here, LarryDScott put up a matched pair of Uberti SAA in 357 for sale. I had tons of 357 components and a thousand reloads so I bought them. I’m going to load +P rounds for this gun so I think I’ll stick because of the safety issue.
Living in Texas is having an effect on me. I’m drawn to lever guns more than I used to be. I’ve picked up three so far. That might be it. The price, stainless and the octagonal barrel made the Rossi irresistible. From a little research, it seems they don’t make this model anymore.
I have a Marlin in 44 Magnum to go with S&W 44 revolver I have

I would not reach the conclusion that the 92 for the casuall is the exact same one in 45 Colt. Could be sizing differences or heat treating differences?

Thanks for the thought. I’ve looked at posts on Castboolits, Marlin Owners, Cowboy action, Leverguns.com and a bunch of others. All the feedback from guys who own the 92s say they are shooting the +P loads with no problems.
