most of the ones ive dealt with have a 32# limit on powder and no limit on primers you can put on same order. hazmat fees kind of saved me as prices have skyrocket in last years. i started buying bigger quantities of powder to spread out the hazmat fees before big price increases so i had more when prices went up. i did this after all the LGS closed up around here. i dont understand why i cant go to UPS hub and have them ship hazmat stuff.hazmat is generally a fee for the shipment, regardless of weight. I think shippers have their charge, but seems some retailers charge differing amounts >= to the shippers fee. I generally look for a no hazmat special AND low shipping plus price. Cause end of the day the cost is exactly what it costs to my door, how they gimmick it up matters not at all. Kinda like when someone says free shipping, it's only free if you didn't have to pay anything for the product (out of pocket) for it, otherwise it's simply built into the price.
So whatever the hazmat fee is, you're certainly better off buying 8lbs vs 1lb, but same could be said for ordering 32lbs or 40lbs over 8lbs. The more you order the lower your hazmat is per unit. Same for primers, the more you order in the same shipment, the lower your hazmat and shipping is per primer.
It sure cost me money to have the hazmat certification of my commercial drivers license. We had to haul certain hazmat things a certain way. Some have to be packaged a certain way. Heres some reading for those who think theres no difference for hauling hazmat. I had to comply with it and I'm sure UPS does alsoHazmat is just another way for the shipper to make money. Its just a piece of paper. One company I worked at shipped semi loads of hazmat stuff every day. There was NO EXTRA CHARGE. The trucker was handed a piece of paper that stated they type of hazmat and that was it.
Ask you UPS or FEDEX guy if he is hazmat certified. NONE of them are.
That piece of paper you refer is the shipping manifest. HazMat shipments require special handling and are subject to quantity limitations due to DOT shipping requirements. Both the shipper and the shipping agent incur addition cost associated with those requirements. These cost can include special packaging and load per vehicle restrictions. For. instance here is 49 CFR 173.171:Hazmat is just another way for the shipper to make money. Its just a piece of paper. One company I worked at shipped semi loads of hazmat stuff every day. Yeah buddy! I just recertified my hazmat two weeks ago. Have to answer all the state questions correctly, FBI background check and fingerprints every four years. Cost me $180. I should say though that it cost my employer $180 which in turn cost you and I $180. What a pain in the arse. Last time I will have to do this, I am retiring from hazmat hauling in 23 months. It sure cost me money to have the hazmat certification of my commercial drivers license. Most hazmat under 1001 pounds you do not have to have a CDL with hazmat. Some things such as poisons, 1.1 1.2 and 1.3 explosives and a few others require a placard and hazmat endorsement on your license. What i dont understand is when I worked in the oil patch in the U.S I was required to have a hazmat cert on my CDL to drive any tanker that was considered hazmat, why do the UPS- FedEx drivers don't have to have any kind of cert or placards displayed if there hauling something considered hazmat?
It’s the “limited quantities” designation. Almost all federal/state EPA regulations and enforcement are triggered by either quantity shipped, population base. Same reason you can only by 40 something pounds per order based on a 50 pound package limit. What i dont understand is when I worked in the oil patch in the U.S I was required to have a hazmat cert on my CDL to drive any tanker that was considered hazmat, why do the UPS- FedEx drivers don't have to have any kind of cert or placards displayed if there hauling something considered hazmat?
Yes, but no hazmat fee on 5000 pieces of loaded ammo...Is there a standard hazmat fee for 8lbs of powder?
No, each company that ship hazmat can charge a different rate and the company thatIs there a standard hazmat fee for 8lbs of powder?

I know the CDL rules I had one, but hazmat is hazmat right?
I believe that is the weight of the truck.Actually its 26,001 lbs if my memory is correct on a CDL
I would really like to know when shipment of powder and primers gets sent out on a CDL class truck if its placard for hazmat.I believe that is the weight of the truck.
Well evidently other shippers aren't look at post above I saw it with my own eyes. It’s the “limited quantities” designation.
