H4895 and H4198 -- Hodgdon Availability Report

If 4895 comes around again, this time for sure...My CC is going to scream!
Yup! I managed to get 8 pounds of H4895 the last time it arrived. I’ll be making a large buy when H4198 pops up!
Unintended consequences: I stopped shooting my 45/70 when H4198 dried up. I still kept the itch for big bores and recently picked up a Marlin lever in 44 Magnum. I like it so much, I might not shoot the 45/70 much in the future. With it’s ten round capacity, the Marlin 44 sure is handy!

I still have a couple 8lb jugs of each, I use both of those powders a lot. I’ll buy a couple more jugs of each if it frees up. I don’t understand why they haven’t made more for so long but that topic has been beat to death, stabbed and rolled off a cliff. Hopefully it happens.

Well after, what is it 4 or 5 years, the possible availability of both is good news. I was a big user of H4198 before its availability tanked and have switched back to N130 and experimented with LT 30. I went with H4198 originally because it was significantly less $ than N130 that I used and gave great results. So did N130. I doubt if I will go back to H4198. Truthfully, I'm cringing thinking about what they will want for either, especially H4198.

Glad to see it coming back. Found an 8 pounder of H4895 over the weekend at an auction. Bought it and one of H4831 for an embarrassing low price. Relatively well stocked with most powders. Picked up 10k of Remington 7 1/2 primers for a fair price.

A serious note.
I have been in buisness for 50 years. Even though we are a manufacturing facility with a strong customer base, we never loose sight of the fact that our customers have other options if we cannot meet their needs. In short, we do not tell our loyal customer base no.

Hodgdon made a decision several years ago to forsake their loyal customer base in the Reloading Community and go for a more, (at the time), lucrative market in the marketing of munitions for a very profitable War in Ukraine.

That’s fine. We all want to make a dollar. But the political climate has changed, and the new Administration has pledged to do everything possible to end that War. That means the Powder that has been sold during the War will now have to be marketed in the Civilian Market.

But what if those abandoned customers have discovered other (available) options that give the same level of performance. Should Hodgdon just assume that every body is waiting with bated breath for the return of two popular powders that were so abruptly taken from the market?

It would be nice if everybody told Hodgdon to take a hike. But we won’t. We will be beating the doors down and burning up the keyboard to get our orders in. And we will pay. Probably $80 a pound.

I include myself in this. When it comes to shooting just a little smaller, or gaining just one more X, I’m as big of a whore as anybody.

Last Oct/ Nov H4895 was available although only seen in 1pounders at a very high price, I held off waiting for 8 pound jugs to be available as with the Varget but none became available that I knew or heard of. Even though alternate powers will perform well in a BRA, I’ll probably bite the bullet and buy what I can when I can and rat hole that stuff..
