7mm Federal Backcountry

From the horse's mouth...

Well the 6.5 prc filled a gap, there was no high performance short action “magnum” 6.5. I wonder if a 6.5 wsm would have taken off if introduced earlier?
And 80,000 psi is a much higher pressure increase than standard maximum of 65ksi. So its kinda not reinventing the wheel imo.

More i think of it, it does seem to be advantageous. Sure a hotrodded 7 wsm, 7prc, or 28 nosler could see great performance in a 20-24” barrel thats ideal in the back country. Hell even 16.5-18” for more suppressor friendly lengths, you could still kill game a long range. But it def wouldnt be as efficient. And thinner case for an extra round or two seems cool. Has merits.
My biggest concern is reloading and how expensive it will be, price of alloy casings? Forming/resizing process, any special equipment? How many reloads?
There was the 6.5 SAUM.......

How do they think this is "The Fastest 7mm cartridge out there" LOL. You notice they didn't list the 28 Nosler or 7mm Weatherby

I can see this for a purist hunting rifle where the goal is to get a
rifle down in weight and will only really see a few rounds per year.
For someone looking at it for the LR games ?? Chasing the lands
will have a whole new meaning. Building a new rifle would have
me look at Bartlien's other steel grade. Other then that.....PASS

Quite the statement out perform the 28 Noz and 7mm weatherby.
I ca B.S.
The guy who wrote the article has obviously never been around either one.

Standard actions do handle the pressure. The issue to me is reloading. Federal owns the patent rights to the metallurgy of the case. They farmed out the reloading issue to some "unnamed" reloading brand. There are no cases available for reloading but you could use cases from the ammo you bought and shot.

No clue what the ammo might cost. There also may not be others involved in the production of the cartridge so expect it to be controlled by Federal for a while.

What it is good for is to get decent velocity, like a 7mm Rem Mag, 280 Improved etc., from short barrels. That is all because of the suppresser usage today. If you don't care for that just use a standard length or longer barrel, ear protection and continue on with your upscale 7mm's for the same velocity.

Now if you got one made with a longer barrel it just might be scary-fast and need special bullets. That's another issue as would be barrels to handle that velocity increase.

Can't help but wonder about barrel life at 80000 operating pressure. Throats won't last long.
My thoughts also. The throat/leade will evaporate quickly. I have to wonder how bullets are going to stand up to that 80,000 kick in the pants, and when leaving the muzzle the exit pressure has to be very high. Pure copper bullets may be essential rather than cup and core bullets.

The standard 7mm Remington can be hard enough on the throat/leade if shot a lot. This has been one of my favorite calibers over the years, and I have some experience with it.

Shorten one of those up to 30BR, and leave the flags at home.....LOL
I could see some rule book changes coming....!!

That thought crossed my mind about 5 minutes after reading the description of the cartridge.
Seems like the Sig brass might give you the same benefit and make resizing easier.

Who is gonna build it?

Might handle the pressure but function/cycling can be or will be the issue. I have yet to see an action at 80k that doesn't have hard bolt lift etc... I've seen them to the point they need a dead blow hammer to open them.

Also the steel case heads don't show pressure like a brass case does. You reload for it....you can easily be pushing the pressures even more.

Right now I'll just keep watching this all from a close distance.

6.5 Rem Mag?
Thats been dead and irrelevant for decades. 6.5-284 i forgot about and surprised that didnt catch but the long range craze happened well after, else the 260 6.5x55 or 6.5-284 would have caught on much more

I think the bolt lift is because the brass flow and bolt thrust. Steel cases dont do that atleast thats what they are saying. All the videos released seem like the guns in 7 bc work like normal rounds

OK, maybe a little anal here. 27 participated in this thread, 11 of them contribute to the site, 16 do not.
Not picking on anybody, but................

You said there was "nothing SAAMI", not that it had to be popular.

i think federal will lose any marketing contest to creedmore...they are just too slick at selling anything...federal... i dont think so

if creedmore senses that federal is grabbing any market share, i think they will answer.... in a much more lucrative way

i could be wrong but creedmore is king of cartridge mktg.

by the way, i shoot "old" cartridges. dont own anything creedmore.

i really think a 7wsm or rem mag is more practical...
my 2 cents
