Competition primer seater

What do you all think. Is the primal rights competition primer seater worth the money? I can’t decide. I don’t shoot competitions anymore but I do live fine tooling. I have a shop full of the best equipment I can afford. I’m just having a hard time pulling the trigger on one of these. I’m sure I’d love it but will I gain from it?

Slower!!??? Really??? It's escapes me how it could possibly be slower than an handheld primer seater.

I picked up mine when my hands started aging with arthritis. I still use my 21st Cent. along with the Primal Rights, but I use the latter more often. Nice top-shelf piece of equipment that I have not regretted purchasing.

It's a fine piece of machinery and really can prime a lot fast. Really easy on the hands.

1. It does not take into account primer thickness variation
2. It does not take into account rim thickness variation.

The only one that I know if that does this is from k&m.

Does it matter? Well that's for you to decide.

I’ll stick with my RCBS unit mounted to my reloading bench thank you very much. I am not shooting 2K benchrest with the best thank you very much. I can and do shoot with most when I can. Age has a way of catching up with you and has with me

You’ll gain speed and repeatability. I’ll have mine forever. And it feels as though it will last that long.

Positives:

1. I can do 100 pieces within probably 5 minutes? I’ve never timed it but it’s stupid fast.

2. I get the same depth spread when measuring both from case head to base of primer and top of rim to primer (measured with shellholder and depth mic) as I did with my 21st century handhelds- which I highly regard. Still have 3 including one that takes Lee trays.

3. If you get one of the inline fab mounts, it can hide under the bench when not in use.

4. You can also seat by “feel” just like a handheld, as you don’t get the mechanical advantage you do with a handheld, and with the handle, it gives you a good feel.

Negatives:

1. The little shuttle has a certain amount of play and “jank” to it. You’d have to feel one to see what I mean. It makes an otherwise rock solid tool feel cheap-ish. Like fake wood in a Rolls-Royce.

2. I wish there was a numbered way to index the adjustment wheel- I have the same complaint with the 21st century “counting the clicks” sucks when switching between components.

3. If some of your primers are on the tall-ish side, like .131”, they may get caught on the shuttle.

I love mine. Won’t ever part with it. I’m actually thinking about getting another one just for SRP stuff.

The PCPS from ugly reloading works on the same principle, just using your press- however, this cuts down on the “feel” because of the mechanical advantage, and is slower for me just because the press sits up higher on my bench and the brass transfer is slower. I do like their solution for the shuttle return, however. And the primer tubes fit a bit more positively.

Slower than the handheld ones with an attached primer tray. Of course, the single load handheld priming tools are slower.

I use a an old priming unit that seats by feel for most of my reloading but for bulk 223 or pistol ammo I bought one of the poor man priming units, its just easier when loading 1000 pieces of ammo in a session. I mounted it on a Harrels compact press that’s portable, I leave them attached and use both as a priming unit. The Poorman’s priming tool has depth adjustment, it’s easy to use, its quality and does a great job. It uses RCBS priming tubes or any of the aftermarket tubes. Lots of videos on the unit, just do a google search. Amazon link to the priming unit and a link to the press below. In my opinion, keep in mind it’s just an opinion, it offers everything the unit you’re asking about does…..

You will gain a significantly lighted bill fold is all. Imho. If there were any meaningful improvement to be had, load wise, every serious benchrest shooter would be clamoring to buy one. They are not.....

There is about a $300 add on to the primal rights unit that can be purchased. Another manufacturer. This will allow you to seat primers by a dial indicator. This seats off bottom of primer pocket. No need to measure primer height. Seating by varied crush can be achieved. While the above referenced unit works, it is slow in comparison. All other primer seaters, ugly base cps and rcbs with hollands upgrade seats by coming to a hardtop. Absolutely no difference. Rim thickness and primer variation are the 2 issues with a hardstop device. They simply won't work. You have 2 choices..the least expensive being the above reference unit K&M. The other is the F Class products upgrade for the primal rights unit. While most rims are close, 10 out of 50 pcs of brass will be .004 to .005 off 1 way or other.
