Bad machining on rem700

I put some lapping compound in there and ran it a while, that smoothed it out some.... but not right..

Said screw it, if Im going to have to send it off to get trued up, im going to let the inner gunsmith in me count out and got my dremel with a long skinny sanding stone and used it to run over the blob/bur and smooth down that lip/step.

I can now load and chamber a round pretty easy. Id say 90-95% how it should be. I think when LRI bushes my firing pin and adds their bolt knob, the extra leverage will make the remaining 5-10% unnoticable.

I am boxing up the action and barrel and sending it to LRI tomorrow morning to have them blueprint the action, install their bolt knob and bush the firing pin.

We are going to re headspace and put the factory barrel back on.

This will be the last factory rifle I buy. (besides a tikka)

The Tikkas are good for a factory rifle, good value.if I was going to blueprint the Remington i would also be putting a match grade barrel on it and recutting the action thread's while I had the action set up.

I thought about it, but at over doubling the cost of what I’m having done to it now, for a 16” 308, I just didn’t want to sink that much into it right now.
My other new Remington in 6.5 with the 5r barrel shoots very accurate. Hoping the same for this.

After $800 for the rifle & $600 more for a krg bravo, trigger tech trigger.. now $500+ in this work, I’m not wanting to dump anymore into it

Assuming they recut the threads how are you going to reuse the old barrel? Usually a factory barrel does not have enough shank to be able to do this. Maybe they are just facing off the front of the action and calling this truing the action. Just curious is all. Good shooting!

Check for interference where the bolt handle root interfaces with the notch feature in the receiver. Had one a while back that did as you describe and the problem was a small ridge left in the cut from the tool path. Have pictures somewhere of how I fixtured it up the relieve it.

I was kinda wondering what you were doing?

They offer 2 different options on truing. 1 does recut the threads on the receiver. The other option does not, here's what is included with it:

  • Single Stroke Diamond Honed ID receiver bore
  • Reconditioned Receiver Lug Abutments
  • Bolt nose resurfaced
  • Bolt face resurfaced
  • Bolt Lugs resurfaced
Im having that done, bolt knob installed and firing pin bushed.

But we reduced our cycle time by 45%. Just look at the cost savings.
I see the same issues at work every day.

"We optimized the program".
I hear that a lot when I get called to troubleshoot a machine that just isn't quite right. Pushing feeds and speeds to the limits will expose any weakness in the system, as well as make sure the results are barely acceptable.

This goes for all manufacturing.

After ALL the years and years of various problems why would anyone buy a Remington and be surprised its not up to standard?

Granted they are under "new" management but I'd be waiting a while to see how things pan out and not purchasing before giving the gun a good once over in store.

I've had 3-4 factory Remingtons that I've never been able to get under 3/4" moa in all my years of buying them.
One was a 220 Swift classic another was a 300 Win. Mag Sendero a 6.5 Creed (RAR Prefix) and lastly a 7-08 varmint.
The 6.5 Creed was the absolute worst Rem I've ever shot. Minute of clay pigeon ( maybe) at 100). Otherwise I've been pretty happy with Remingtons (for factory guns) and I have a few.

I think that's where we need to put it into context. A lot of us are spoilt and when you go back to a factory gun you realise just how much is wrong with them.

I have a couple of pre 2000 vssf 700s with HS stocks. Cut back and fitted old target barrels and bedded them and they shoot .3 with ammo they like and .75 with anything decent. Bolt lift and timing is terrible, had to stone the sharp edges off the bolt head to prevent binding but never trued the actions but they are plenty fit for purpose. Doubt I'd ever sell them as they are consistent and set up to take a beating.
