260 at 600 yards

I've been invited to shoot steel at 600 yards. I'm probably going to take the 260 I screwed together a few years ago, Savage action, 24" Shilen Select match, varmint contour with a 1-9" twist, my deer rifle.

I'm considering Nosler Custom Competition 123 grain bullets. Anyone ran them in a 260?

I have shot 260 in F-class at 600 yards for several years. With lower G7 BC of .241, the Nosler CC 123's are a little too light to buck the wind. I settled on Lapua Scenar 136s with a G7 BC of .285.

To ring the best performance out of the 260 @ 600 yds. the130 - 140 gr. class bullet is a much better option however 1 - 9 Tw. may not stabilize certain bullets.

They should shoot fine out of your 1:9 twist. It isn't, comparatively speaking, a high BC bullet, so you'll have to keep an eye on the conditions, like @chromatica mentioned. The CC is a pretty forgiving tangent ogive bullet.

Thanks guys, I built the rifle to shoot 120 grain bullets, hence the 1-9" twist. I'll need to pick up some 130's and see if it'll stabilize them.

My only other choice is a 1-12" twist 22-250, I thought the 260 would be a better choice.

With the right bullet/load combo the 260 will be the wind beater @ 600 yds.

I am somewhat surprised the Sierra 123 SMK hasn't been mentioned as an alternative.
I shot 6.5-47L in 600 Yard BR matches using the 123SMK and had very good results.
I found them to be much more forgiving than the Nosler CC as far as seating depth too.
Also, the Berger 130 Hybrid will be (or very near) max BC with that twist rate as well (if you can find them).

The 140smk should be able to stabilize just fine in a 1:9 twist and you will likely be pushing 2650ish velocity.

I tried the 123 Matchkings. Even with my 8 twist barrel, they weren't cutting it. After field testing, I ran a bunch of ballistic scenarios at 1,000 yards to see that windrift in a 10 mph crosswind was 93 inches. For the Scenar 136 it was 77 inches. That is a huge difference on an F-class target!

Try some 130 ELD-Ms. They are fine in a 9 twist and a decent BC.

The 130 grain, ELD-M's shoot "Small" ( One ragged Hole, in the 3's ) with, Low Recoil, in my 1-8 twist, Tikka T-3, 24",.. Braked,.. 6.5 Creed. for Serious FUN on, Steel Plates !
Couldn't get, the Berger Hunting H-VLD's to Shoot, anywhere NEAR as "Good" as, the ELD-M's ,.. yet.
Heard real GOOD Thing's about, the 130 gr. Berger, Hybrid, OTM's !
I'll continue to shoot, the Hornady 130 gr,.. M's for Steel and Hunt with, the 143 gr.,.. X's

I’ve used 123 Custom Competition & 123SMKs in 1x7.5 & 1x8. In my experience at 600yds the SMKs shot tighter groups (sling shooter).
If you have the 123 CCs try, every barrel is different. I’ve successfully used H-4350, H-4831SC, RL-16 & RL-17 with Federal 210M & 205M.
You can learn a lot about the accuracy of a load at 100yds.

I’ve shot a 260 in F Class since the 90’s. My barrel is a 8 twist and 142 SMK’s or 140 Berger hybrids pushed By H-4350 or H-4831 is a hard combination to beat

When I was shooting XC, I shot through 4 .260rem 1-8“ barrels. 120’s for 200/300 and 123SMK / 44gr H4350 for Prone slow fire. They were the proverbial laser.

I own a 260 but the 139 Lapua Scenars shoot best in that rifle.. I have shot the 123 Noslers in my 6.5 Grendel tho. They do ok. Not as accurate as the 123 ELDM. I'd recommend trying both before settling on the Nosler.
