When did Remington still make good 700's?

don't be a remington hater 700s are great rifles shot them all my life everyone I've owned shot great the only rem I ever had that shot bad was a model 7 I shot tikas wasn't impressed with them just my opinion if rems were junk why is everyone cloning them just my 2 cents.
Same reason Chevy 350s are what most people use in race cars... Their cheap because their plentiful , their plentiful because their cheap... There's plenty of high dollar stuff out there that's tons better but you can get a 350 block out of a junk yard , bore it , clean it up and make a pretty decent little motor.... Other brands have better things design wise than Chevy and Chevy has better things in their design than others... Unfortunately if you want the best of all of them combined in one then you buy aftermarket purpose built stuff which is neither cheap or plentiful... It might even look like a 350 but absolutely nothing in a modern aftermarket block is built by Chevy and they are not even in the same league... Same thing goes for aftermarket clone actions , it may look and act like a stock Remington action but it definitely is not nor is it made by Remington... A good Remington clone action will cost you more than a new Remington rifle...

I think the old Remington had a good idea when they offered the single shot actions. Too bad the new Remington hasn’t offered them that I’m aware of.

One of mine with an HS stock, 308 13T Schnieder barrel, zero freebore, Pierce lug, Timney trigger. 10.2 lbs as pictured.

Through the years, I have worked on several 40x receivers.
If they attempted to “true the face“, they did a pretty crappy job.
The threads were no different.

The lingering myths surrounding the 40x proves that Remington did a great job in promoting their “Custom Shop” and the 40X.
Quite possible. All the ones I have owned were good.

My favorite deer rifle is my Rem 700 CDL in .270. Shot many with it. I also like Tikka. I have a T3 hunter in .308 that is a great rifle. I still use Rem 700 actions in bench guns. Blueprinted correctly, they shoot great.

Considering that not many years ago, buddies would sell Rem 700’s to each other for $300, shops might be $4-$450. Take it out and shoot less than 2”groups. Handloads get you in the 1-1/2” range. Take the action out of the stock, clean up the boogers, properly torque the screws, more time tuning handloads, good scope & bases, and suddenly your groups are below an inch.
Don’t bore scope the barrel, just run it. For an American made, mass produced, affordable rifle. They were pretty darn good. Are some poorly machined? Quite possibly so. The triggers…don’t mess with them unless you are confident in how they work, and what you should and shouldn’t do. I’d rather have creep than a bump bang!
For deer rifles, coyote rifles, woodchuck rifles, they are quite effective. Some that I’ve owned are like lasers in the field. Very consistent and predictable. In my experience, factory support out of Ilion was outstanding. A thing of the past unfortunately.

I kinda like this 700, six years old.
Absolutely beautiful , Remington has some beautiful lines and really a classic look...I have gone to synthetic stocks for rifles that will be used for hunting or general use but you can't really show off a plastic stock gun... They have a use but the wood stock guns are what everybody loves and some of the wood although expensive is sooooo worth it... I could never bring myself to take that gun into harsh woods for fear of scratching it , I would cry...

That's also the reason if I had a Ferrari it would sit in a garage..... People say you need to enjoy owning beautiful stuff , I bought a new truck in September and probably will never be able to buy another new truck and it's very nice , a cowboy Cadillac as we call them in Texas and I keep it clean... Luckily the other day I decided to take my old 2008 and run it through the automated car wash and believe it or not a lady rear ended me in the carwash , a carwash that pulls you through while the cars in neutral.... Luckily it wasn't my new one and it didn't hurt anything but I still can't believe it happened...

Remington put better barrels on the 40X models and never put cheap stocks on them. This accounted for the better accuracy they had. I too have taken apart a fair number of them and the actions were not any truer than 700's of the same vintage. The face of the receivers appeared to be cut off with an abrasive blade, not on a lathe, just like 700 receivers. I've owned 2 digit 40X's (still do) up to the upper 50,000 range and they all shot very well.

It’s called a Tikka, lol.

I am curious about those 700 Alphas which are supposedly made to much closer to custom action specs.
I own three Tikka rifles. But I did have a bolt shroud blow off and cut me just slightly below the eye. I am now having 2ed thoughts about Tikka rifles

In my 700 experience, a late 90's vssf 308 and a 5R 223 were very good, none of them had that ugly bolt lock, My Dad has a tikka in 223 and its fantastic, if I was buying new I would look at the tikka or a seekins, Dad also has a bergara hmr in 6.5CM that we can't get to shoot.

Current production 700 Actions seem to be well made, excluding the issue of a lack of primary extraction.

I am looking at a Remington 700 in .308 with a 26" barrel. The barrel has 2 sets of letters stamped on it in this order: BT AZ. The serial number starts with E651****. The stock is synthetic. Believe it loads from the top and you can unload from the bottom (like a BDL perhaps?) Is there anyone that can tell me what the 4 letters mean (in order) and, more importantly, what model 700 this is?
Thanx,
Greek

With the Internet, it seems that every product has those rabid haters, no matter what it is. Guns are no different. The more established a company is, the more attacks they seem to generate.

The sad part is that, no matter what the product, guitars, guns, cars, those doing the denigrating of the item, probably never even owned one.

I'd have zero problem buying a new Remington, but I bought a Savage Axis Precision in .223. It does exactly what I expect it to do, and it's very accurate. I think almost all guns manufactured today are exactly that.
