Lack of 22-250 brass

I'm guessing there are a lot of "retired" rigs out there due to these cool .20's. It's been years since I pulled out my .243, once my main coyote rig. Now, it is .17 Hornet and if I need a "bigger gun", it is the .20 Practical or .22 Nosler. Ha

Yeah - I'd never get rid of mine, though I do find that, with the smaller calibers doing such as great job, I just haven't reached for it in a long time. If I go to certain longer-range shooting spots again, I'll be glad I kept it.

My .22-250 Rem using 50 gr. V-Maxes, GETS "Retired" every Winter and comes Out again, in Late Spring when the Sage Rats do ! It's "Braked" NOW and IF, I can keep, the Velocity below,.. 3,500 FPS,..
I can watch, the Body Parts,.. Fly !!
PS; Us Old Guys, NEVER, ever, "Run Out" of, Components after,.. the O'Bozo era !

A couple of Years ago, I bought some Nosler, .22-250 Rem. Brass and,..
It was, real NICE !!! I don't Know, WHO made it,. Possibly,.. Norma ??
T'was getting, "Bug Hole" group's with them, & 55 gr. F B, Berger Varmints using, 37.7 gr's of, H-380 "Thrown" Chg's !

I finally abandoned the 22-250 for good. Cut off the tenon on my remaining one and re-chambered to 222.

I used 22-250 exclusively for PDs for 30 years. Started getting concussion headaches after 75-100 rounds when using a brake to see impact.

Switched to 20 VT and 223 and now added 222 to the stable....never regretted the change.

Back in the old days when the 22-50 was called the 22 Varminter before Remington made it commercial, everyone had to make their brass. The most common was the 250 Savage which was the original parent. I have seen guys make them from 243 Win and even 308. It was a lot of work but you had to do what you had to do to shoot.
 
There are vintage sets of dies that come up for sale occasionally on ebay for the forming of 22-250 from 30-06 cases. Search the internet and you will find many reloaders that have converted all kinds of cases to 22-250.

I trust Bronsin has done this successfully and I'm sure others have also. My experience has been much less than successful. The shoulder and taper is not the problem. It is the case head diameter at the .200 line.

I have unfired WW 22-250 with a measurement of .461 at the .200 line. Measuring case heads from everything that might make a 22-250 case is all at least .003 larger than my 22-250. The closest I have found is some old unfired WW 308 that measures .464. Most everything I measure is .005-.007 larger.

When I do get a case finally formed that will fit in my chambers, anything but the mildest load will cause "clickers" from hell. The case head is just too large in diameter and I don't know of a good way to reduce the diameter without tearing my press and reloading table apart trying to size it down.

I rechamber my own barrels with a reamer I got from a well known supplier. I ordered the stock 22-250 reamer. I can only guess that the chambers these other guys have are larger than mine. I don't know?

When there was no other alternative I have solved clickers by slightly reaming the rear of the chamber, but in this case that would be counter productive as my chambers are a pretty good fit to the 22-250 brass I have.

For now I have abandoned the idea of making 22-250 brass.

7x64 brass might work... at least the European made stuff. (Haven't measured the RP stuff that was floating around.) The .200 line spec is a couple of thou smaller than other .473" cases
 
Couple friends of mine ran 308 brass sized to 22-250 to be used in their Rem 788's. This was back in the early 80's. They have all moved on to 22-250 brass, I never asked why the 308 brass. I run Sig brass and really like it in 22-250 and 223.
