The Concept of Barrel life & Chamber Setback

Try one of the UrbanRifleman barrels. They are $320. Then you can just buy another one when that one wears out, and screw it on in 5 minutes and go shooting.

Ps: recently I have had more questions on barrel life than anything. People are suddenly OBSESSED with whether they will get 2000 rounds or 2500 rounds. Even more than actual performance. I've only had a few customers actually shoot barrels to the end of their life and order a replacement. Be it because people have multiple rifles, or that they don't shoot as much as they think, I don't see people grinding through barrels like pro shooters.
True, true, true! I have a 6MM Remington that the original barrel lasted 15 years, I replaced it. I then picked up a 223 Remington and did most my varminting with it, 20 years later the 6MM Remington and the 223 still have the same barrels from 20 years ago.

I am a proponent of newer cartridges like the 6MM and 22 ARC, lower pressures, higher efficiencies. Lifetime rifles for field work. Barrel wear for the varmint shooter is an issue for dog town shooters more than anything else. High pressures will shorten barrel life for any cartridges. My 358 Norm is 32 years old and the barrel still shoots like new.

I set back two 6.5x47’s recently. One was a Krieger, the other a Brux. Both had over 3K rounds on them.

I cut 2” off the chamber end, then treated it as a new barrel. Both came back to life exceptionally. So essentially I cut away 4” of barrel total. There is still some alligator skin but they are humming.

The Krieger is on a hunting gun, I worked up a solid load, shot it in one BR match to prove it out, and put it back in the safe. I’ll save that for speed goats and deer. Maybe a song dog or two.

The Brux is on my 600 yard BR gun and so far this year I’m doing pretty well, winning some light and heavy events, and taking first or second overall in two gun every match this year. Clay W @Mulligan Has the records posted on here somewhere.

I’ve got a brand new Krieger and Brand new Brux sitting on the lathe bench I’m going to get spun up and ready; but for now I’m going to keep letting the 3K+ round 6.5 make the 6mm guys mad.

Sounds like some fine shooting on your part! How about a few pics of the rifles? You can't just leave us hanging. Lol.

Okay thank you much everyone. This makes a lot of sense. I'll not worry about accounting for multiple setbacks when figuring out the barrel length for my build. I'll just go with my desired length. If it comes to the rare reason to setback once, I'll just deal with the shorter barrel.
Dinner -

Howdy !

If you haven't already, can I suggest that you read up on internal ballistics-related topics of rifles ?

Things like rifle " expansion ratio ", " bore capacity ", " peak pressure ", " load density ", powder' " flame " temperature; et al.

Can't hurt to know the conditions under which barrel life is shortened or greatly reduced,
compared to reasonable expectations.

Not trying to be a smart _ _ _.

Yep,
That pesky 6.5 was “in the fight” the last few matches.

E-Target is 47 with setback Brux, Paper target is with a turned down and setback Krieger originally from the bench gun. All 600 yards
