30-30 Powder Inputs

I am loading for a session tomorrow with 150 grain Sierra FN. I am planning on testing 2 powders. Lever is a given. However, I have 3 other powders in the stable. Would like to know any results for other reloaders on these and suggestions on which one to try first.

H-4895
IMR-4895
CFE-223

Thanks.

Of the powders you have listed I would use H 4895 first the the DuPont idk much about the 223
I have had good results from H 4895 W 748 but I think the last time I loaded for it I was using Imr 3031

If you will be hunting with it in mild weather, start with H4895. Not sure how much your weather temp swings during your hunting season, but if NC can see 65 degrees or 35 degrees any given hunting season day, the H4895 temp stable will be a blessing. Here in MI I have to plan for 65 to 15 degrees.

If you are going to be just plinking.... iMR4895. Simply because H4895 is hard to find and expensive when you do find it

mmcu,
Why do you prefer the imr over the H ?… I found in the Dasher the H to be more consistent and less temp sensitive but I never compared them in a 3030

Accuracy and velocity are about the same, so I recommended IMR as it's not as hard to find as Hodgdon.

I tested IMR and H 4831 in my 6.5 and the IMR shoot tighter than the H4831. Same bullet same cases same day. I didn't have enough of it to continue and the Hodgdon was very close, and I had plenty of Hodgdon. I am not sure that there was enough difference to worry about.

We were hunting in 20 degree weather this year. So, it would be good to have something temp stable.

I was working in North GA on the homestead and found some 3031 at the gunshop that has all the reloading gear. It was $39 and I couldn't say no, so that is what I will be using. I had planned on WIN 748 but its my go to for 223 and I would just as soon use it for that

3031 has always been my go to powder for the 30-30. It’s available in my area and the last time I looked online. I would not use H4895. I’d save it for my 308s and Dashers.
I agree, if OP can source some 3031, that's the way to go. It is a bit more temp sensitive, but I use for my 303 savage with 150gr RN. My testing/tuning was 50 degrees and below. It did just fine. Doesn't miss at iron sight distances. I also have a Rx7 load with a 130 spitzer. No issues at iron sight distances as well.

DRT at 110yds with the 130 spitzer. Got that buck right at first light, ruined a whole day I had planned for a wonderful stalking hunt. It also introduced me to the good ol cheetin can.
