Hornady 62 ELD-VT 223 Load

Cfshooter

Silver $$ Contributor
So i have not seen much of any data with the VT in 223 so i figured i would post my start with them. This was just a quick velocity test with XBR to see what kind of speeds to look for and where the top may be for the combo out of a 20" AR. They seem to show promise although i was only at 50 yards, but the POI was very consistent.

midway usa has them in stock today - limit two boxes

I am hoping they get to be like V-Max and they are available with some regularity.
For me, no point in testing them and getting hooked on them only to have them be unobtanium.

Thanks again for the pointer.

I know that the ELD's are the latest and greatest according to Hornady but the 60 Vmax shoot unbelievably good (in 1/2 moa range) in a number of my 8" twist 223 Rem Tikka Bolt rifles. As an added bonus, they are not expensive and have been available in abundance.

PS: They hit like a sledgehammer on predators.

I agree, big fan of the 60 vmax. Hoping the VT’s hold together better at 300-500.

Yeah - I know what you mean. Back around ten years ago, I bought a great quantity of the 50 V-Max when they sold them in the 500-pack Z-Max packaging which could be had for $45.00 on sale. While I preferred the 53 V-Max, the price differential was substantial and for my ground squirrel eradication purposes, the higher price of the 53 was not justified. The 50's would hit anything inside 300 yards that the 53 could, etc.

The G1 BC on the 50 V-Max is .242, the 60 V-Max is .262 and the BC on the 62 ELD VT is .395. For those longer shots - that new bullet will be the bullet of choice, provided the BC's are relatively true and the bullet as accurate as its predecessors. It is hard for me to want to buy the new bullets at around $30.00 per hundred when I have many that cost $9.00 per hundred that get the job done. But that BC knaws at me. Ha!

That is an extremely impressive BC, .395. However, all my varmint and predator hunting are within 300 yards due to terrain restrictions and quite honestly, my ability to make an ethical shot on those critters off the cross sticks beyond 300 yards which is my method of field shooting.

The 60 Vmax works quite well in my 8" twist bolt rifles given those limitations. My wallet likes it too. :) Also there has been an ample supply of them at my local shot and at blue collar reloading. The one issue I want to avoid, if possible, is supply limitation. I don't want to spend primers and powder developing a load for a new bullet then find out I can't get them, or I can't afford them for both practice and hunting.

Thx for your preliminary work up data. Pls keep updates going. Got 3 boxes of VT s coming for my 223 and anxious to test.

Plan to try TAC as I ve got a good supply of it and want to hang onto my H4895 and CFE223.

My modified mag will take up to 2.5” oal so will try them close to the lands like I run 75 s.

What are you going to be testing them in?
I will start with 223 and if that looks good move them up to 22CM.
With the overbore versions, it is just too much trouble to try bullets that don't look promising at regular speeds first. The bbl life is just too short to waste on the wrong stuff, so I will take the crawl, walk, run approach to these and see how it goes.

So they didn’t do so good out of the 20” gasser. I think they may like to be in the lands. Next will be a two powder load test in a 1/9 bolt gun.IMG_9654.jpeg
