John Myers AR15

Was watching the latest Cortina podcast with John Myers and he talked about an AR15 he started with almost 20 years ago shooting 0.18 aggs.
I am curious what he did to that gun. He mentioned it was a 26" barrel, but that was about it. I don't know why, but seems the accuracy potential of an AR has been overlooked for quite a while and the default is to go bolt gun. I shoot both and like to work on both of them, so it is an interest of mine.

There was also a benchrest AR15 a while back too.

I am just curious what made those so special and why most people now just refer to the AR as a 1 MOA gun.

Well had a few back in my days .
Top of the Line Parts and Kreiger 1-7.7 Barrels, Wyle Chamber Gas Tube moved 2” forward .
Kreiger Millozo Trigger Put together with TLC

Hope this Helps
Pretty much a standard competitive Highpower spec ... but could it shoot under 1/4 MOA?

It's pretty hard to screw one together with that kind of accuracy, let alone consistently duplicate that!

This was in the 1990 days I referred to .
I sold one about a year ago that cleaned a 600 yard F-Class Target more than once. Posted a e-Target 200-11 If I remember correctly?
Held a record in Illinois 1999 to 2017 at Milan Range
AR Match Rifle Prone 600 yard 200–11x
2017 a Palma Rifle took it 200-17 !

I had a RRA 20" bull barrel upper that shot many many sub .3" groups with the 80.5 Berger over 24 grains of Varget with CCI-450s. The only mod to the lower was an Elfman 3 lb. trigger. Single feed of course.

I wonder if John meant he ran the gun from the magazine, or if he single fed?

I have been very lucky with ARs from good folks (Derrick Martin, John Holliger, etc.).

All of these will clean the F targets, (<0.5 MOA) out to 300 yards with long strings of +20 shots, even with mediocre ammo. Given better bullets and carful loading, they do that to 600 yards.

However, I will never claim a 0.18", group or agg, nor will I claim the 223 is an easy tune going out past 300 yards. Something about the 223 case that makes getting a tight velocity stat difficult in a AR or bolt gun for that matter.

@VA_XTC_Shooter , have you ever run an AR built with a varmint profile made with a high quality match barrel? All of the ones I have had land me closer to that 0.25" statistic than the usual 1.5" folks talk about.

That's still pretty exceptional! I can't say I've seen <0.5 MOA for 20 shots @ 600 yds, but most of what I have done/seen was with a sling.

Nice work.

That isn't from prone/sling, that is off of front and rear rests as in F-Class style, and only when the wind is still, and being single fed with either Berger or Sierra over Varget.

Not varmint profile. Have a standard 20" SR and 24" spacegun. I can't get 20 shots under .5 moa, but can shoot 5 shot grops like that.

I am more interested to see if there was something done differently than quality parts and basic assembly to get an AR to shoot consistently in the .18/.2. for 20 shots. That is impressive. I don't buy it was just luck of the draw with the barrel.

Gordy Gritters has been doing AR accurizing for years with tremendous success. Robert Whitley is also amazing with "consistent" precision in AR platforms.
