Electric Cars -- anyone own one?

It was a possible solution to your dilemma. Not really a suggestion or advice. Hence the question mark. I am intrigued by the seeming attraction of Teslas that cause them to join together. Do you have a theory on that? Could it be that your extreme dislike of the vehicles causes the disgust you feel when two are side-by-side to be squared, and it is actually just happenstance? Hmmm....
"I don't harbor any dislike towards Teslas. During my time working for the State, I commuted 100 miles round trip to the office daily, often covering nearly 200 miles in my state vehicle. This resulted in a significant amount of windshield time. In my experience, whenever there was a delay, such as a reduction from 80 mph to 67 mph, a Tesla was frequently involved. My partner and I would even bet on the color of the Tesla as we eventually passed it.

I believe autopilot may contribute to this, as we often observed Tesla drivers not fully focused on the road. The phenomenon of Teslas being side by side remains puzzling to me. In my opinion, shared by many others, some Tesla drivers appear inconsiderate to others on the road. While I acknowledge that this behavior is not exclusive to Tesla drivers, it's notable when in the HOV lane, a column of vehicles cruising smoothly at 85 mph suddenly slows to 65 mph for no apparent reason – and, more often than not, there's a Tesla with a single occupant displaying a red or green sticker (allowing single occupancy for EV's) in the HOV lane causing the slow-down.

Teslas are a well built vehicle. I feel EV's as well as ICE vehicles have a place. I like others don't care to have EV's shoved down our throat.

Dateline 24 Jan 2023 (SeekingAlpha.com, edited for brevity, emphasis added):

Tesla share price fell to under $200. In fact, Tesla is the only Magnificent 7 member to not make significant strides back to the all-time highs seen in November 2021, when the electric carmaker hit nearly $410/share and had a market capitalization of $1.3T (it's now valued at $660B). Tesla warned that vehicle volume growth may be notably lower this year.

On competition from Chinese EV manufacturers, Elon Musk said in a post-earnings conference call "We have lots of people who want to buy our car but simply cannot afford it. ... Frankly, I think if there are no trade barriers established, they will pretty much demolish most other car companies in the world. So they're extremely good."

So there it is. More help from Guvment needed, in the form of trade barriers.

Update: Tesla dropped another 12% today.

What kind of EV do you have that does that? Never heard of it. Mine gets best mileage at city speeds, about 40-45MPH
I was a bit too conservative at 5 mph. Tesla publishes ~17 mph (Roadster) or ~21 mph (Model S) as the most range-efficient speeds. ICE vehicles are most range-efficient at around 45 to 55 mph (and EPA bases their MPG estimates on 49 mph).

I use the HOV lane in AZ, as all alternative fuel vehicles can. It was backed up and moving very slowly this morning. Turned out to be an old Ford quad cab pickup with a trailer and 4 landscapers.

Auto pilot is really unlikely to be drawing Teslas together to make them travel in pairs or groups. If there are inattentive drivers, that is a driver problem, not a Tesla one. And has nothing to do with grouping either.

If you dislike the CA government policies wrt EVs, I do not blame you. But that has nothing to do with Teslas or them "appearing" to travel in pairs.

And the analogy with microwave steak is still quite unclear as well.

Solid-state batteries -- If makers can get solid-state tech on-line, it might well be a big improvement. Much greater energy density, speedier charging, less susceptible to charging issues in the cold. Toyota and some others are making serious strides. Not quite there yet, but soon ...

Here is some interesting points. In 2023 China became the worlds biggest exporter of cars passing Japan. In the final quarter of 2023 the Chinese auto company BYD passed Tesla as a manufacturer of purely battery powered vehicles. It started as a battery company. Last year it sold 3million ev or hybrid vehicles in 70 countries. THe Chinese bought 22 million passanger vehicles in 2022. China presently makes 70% of the worlds lithium-ion batteries .
It is clearly why the US is subsidizing this EV adventure. It isn't about politics or your personal feelings. It is a changing for the better world. Speed bumps are ahead. Raw nationalism and isolation is not going to be the long term solution.
