Roy Hunter stocks

That’s the way I prefer it, both in the color of the wood and the satin finish. Very classy!
I've got a pretty nice Cerrus(sp) here that I've gone back and forth on. I like satin on some but I've done this one both ways and still not sure which I like better on it. I'll post pics when I get it finished. Needs to warm up from where it is now. I can heat the paint room a bit but it was around zero this morning and I don't wanna take a chance on it just yet.

I’ve always felt like a satin finish feels warmer - more inviting and comfortable to touch. A glassy polished finish loses the feel of wood.

All my stocks are a satin finish because it feels nicer to me and I spend as much time touching my stocks as I do oogling them :)

@Roy H do you have a favored method you don’t mind sharing for the final finish step?

I’ve tried 0000 wool and craft paper and currently like using the craft paper best for the final buffing step.

Actually its more work than a clear coat. Probably why you dont see it as often.
I'm not sure what you're referring to. Different methods possibly. I have clear with a flattening agent added. It works just like gloss. Matte also hides some minor imperfections that will show with a gloss. I'd say just a different method and material vs knocking the shine back on a gloss.

Ya theres different methods. If you notice, you can see the grain still in the stock. Its not clear with flattener added. Which I wont even do anymore. It has to be left as sprayed and cant be touched up. If a guy leaves a gun loose in a case it buffs it up in spots. I definately dont like a matte or satin clear on a gun stock. Im not sure what Roys doing but I know its not clearcoat.

There's something about laying your cheek on a fine piece of
walnut and still smelling the linseed.

Anyone doing a hot lacquer spray ??

When I was a kid in high school a local gunsmith named Harry Lawson made a very popular stock at the time. He offered 80% blanks. I finished out a few for friends. I did Tru-Oil and remember hand rubbing them out with pumice and or rottenstone or something like those for matte finishes. It was time consuming and a bit of work :)
