30-284 Winchester anyone shooting it

@Steveb , I don't know if there would be a practical difference in accuracy. With a properly designed chamber and throat, I bet there wouldn't be. I know I couldn't shoot the difference. I'm just a hunter and work on shooting my hunting rifles as accurately as I can.

@Longrange57 , I forgot about that thread and that I asked you a couple of questions about your loads! I'm glad to hear you're still shooting those well. I'd like to try a 200gr bullet or close to it, but my throat is 0.130, which is just right for the 185 juggs I've been shooting. I've been considering renting a unithroater to increase the throat, or having my reamer reground to a 0.200 fb.

I've been trying to look at the ballistics and what I might be able to achieve for velocity with various bullets to see if it would be better to go 200gr+ or stick to 175-180gr for hunting. My max distance is about 700-800 depending on conditions, so the wind factor doesn't seem to be as big if the shot is shorter and the bullet is moving faster like a 175.

What brass have you been using?
I neck up 284 Lapua brass. No hassle at all. Works great. The 185 Jugg is one of my favorite bullets. Both rifles shot them well during break in. If you are not shooting F-class out to 1,000 yards, and looking at 800 max, the 185 is probably as good as you can get.

Have you happen to have tried the 178 eldm or 178 eldx in yours?

With the bc of these, I think they may work well for my hunting purposes and the cost savings would be nice.

Have not shot those in 30-284. I did shoot the 178 eldm in 308 a number of years ago. It did not shoot quite as good as 185 Jugg.

Sniper handle. Do you have the experience to compare the 30-284 to the 30-06AI. These are my two choices for a rechamber on a just broke in barrel I have in 308 that I want to use up in F-Open. Bullet choice to run from 200-20X, 200 Hybrid, 208 Hybrid and 215 Hybrid. Thx

Yes, I also built and still shoot a 30-06 AI which is very accurate. 54 Grains of Reloder 22 and 208 Amax's shot a 249 with 16 x's to get a 1st place at 1000.

I haven't shot any matches with it in a while, But it still shoots just as good as it always did. Both Cartridges are excellent choices, The 30-284 is more work.

With the 06 when I first chambered it, I took it to the range with a few boxes of nos Lake city Match 30-06 1962 model year and it shot under 1/4 inch groups fireforming.

After shooting that brass for a while, I purchased Lapua 30-06 brass and used that for Long Range Comps.

I know a lot of guys no longer use Reloder 22 or Amax's, But I had stocked that stuff deep in the day and I'm still using it up. I got the highest velocities in the 30-284 with Reloder 17.

People at the matches had a hard time believing that the barrel on my rifle was a brand new take off Sako TRG-22 Barrel in 308 that I rethreaded and re-chambered to 30-06 AI, I bought that barrel around 2010 or so From Speedy Gonzales on Ebay for if I remember right, Around $100.00 LOL.

So in closing, The two Cartridges are both great Cartridges that I really enjoy shooting, Either one will do you right.

While I am sure it is a neat cartridge I am not sure what it buys one in a short action over a 300 Rem SAUM
other than having something unique. It does sound like you are enjoying yourself which is worth a great deal. Of course it does avoid a magnum bolt head mod.

A Short action will not work out for the 30-06 or the 30-284 throated for heavies, You can do it, But it's a single shot and you have to remove the bolt to unload a loaded round.

There were some 40x short actions chambered for long rounds, But It never made sense to me.

At the time I built those two rifles, Our Club Matches had different classes, One was the 308 Class, If it shot a 308 projo and wasn't chambered in a Magnum designated cartridge, It was legal to use in that class, It gave you a pretty good advantage over the guys shooting the 308 Winchester, As most of them were shooting the 175 SMK's back then, That was around the time when 6.5-284 was starting to be seen on the lines in their respective classes.

Shooting the heavies out of the 30-284 or the 30-06AI bucked the winds much better than the 308 which was losing steam by the time it got to the 1000 yard targets.

In those days there were still a lot of 308's on the lines. The 6.5 Man Bun took over later on.

For single loading, never had a problem with the short action of the 40X. In the past I had .30-06, 7 Rem. Mag. and .300 Win. Mag. factory 40Xs (Rem. only made these long cartridge calibers in the single shot version). Seldom had to pull a loaded round and wasn't a big chore when I did. Always figured a short action was stiffer. I currently have long cartridges in Shilen DGA, Wichita and 40X short actions and get along fine with them in conventional prone. Going to finish up a .30-06 AI to shoot this year -- been on my to do list for some time now. Any suggestions for a load with the 185 Jugs and 200-20X? (have both of them plus all of the Sierra MKs from 168 to 200 gr.)

That's exactly right, They were single load for sure. Kind of a cool thing they did, Just don't know why really.

I never shot any Boolits under 208 weights, So I have no loads for them. Winchester 760 is an under appreciated powder that I have had good luck with in both cartridges. I wouldn't be afraid to try some of the newer powders. I have bought several pounds of Staball 6.5, But I have not gotten around to using it yet. But the slower powders work pretty well with the heavies.

The elevation here is close to 6000 feet, So I get away with heavy bullets in the 1-11 Twist on the 30-06 AI. The 30-284 has a 1-10 and it stabilizes 240 SMK's well. I don't know how well it would work down at the beach.

Edit to add,

I would love to have one of those Shilen Actions to play around with.

Standard .473 bolt face.
