30-284 Winchester anyone shooting it

I have always thought a 30 X 284 with the shoulder blowed out to 40 degree would be sweet.

That’s exactly where my mind was going with it ;)

A friend had a barrel spun up in 30 PRC (6.5 PRC necked up) which is similar capacity to the 284 Win. Waiting to see his results. 30 cals are very accurate and I think a 30-284 or 30-284 Improved would push 185-210gr bullets plenty fast for 1K BR but not have as much recoil as the 300 WSMs some folks use.

@Jtate , I have a 30-284 imp reamer set on the way. 40* shoulder and 0.486" shoulder/body jxn diameter. So basically 30-284 shehane with 40* shoulder.

I actually received it last week but it was made to wrong print revision

Can anyone tell me what h4350 charge showed pressure for a 185jugg?

I'm looking for a starting point to work up to finding pressure in my 30-284 imp w 185s and h4350

In case anyone is interested in knowing, I got very slight ejector marks at 56.5gr h4350, but took it up to 58gr and they looked virtually the same. No primer flattening or primer cratering.

Don't have velocity data yet. Groups were good at 100 for 55-56gr

30-284 improved
1x Fire formed Peterson, fired case h20 cap 68.9gr
185 jugg, 0.020 off
4 groove 10twist 24" barrel

I'm wondering about checking cases for pressure on the 284 case, especially when the shoulder is blow out 0.010.

I had very slight ejector marks at 56.5 so backed down to 55.5 because the groups were good there. But at that charge, the base of my brass (Peterson 1x fired) would expand more than what I understand it's supposed to, unless my understanding is not correct. My Peterson brass starts out as 0.499 on the base right on the edge of the extractor groove. After firing the 55.5 charge, it would expand to 0.500 on some.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't sweat those measurements too much. I have several 284 reamers (straight). One of the tweaks I have done with each successive one is to adjust the B-line dimension. My latest one is 0.502" and I finally got rid of the clickers. The smallest base diameter I can size to with any of my dies is 0.500" on newer brass. That creeps towards 0.501 after multiple firings. The 0.501" reamer still developed clickers even with my small base body die.

In my rifles it is a function of the chamber and does and not the pressure. I have gotten 14 firings out of brass and the primer pockets are still snug enough.

Good to know.

My 0.200 from base dimension is 0.502 on the chamber reamer and 0.498 on the resizer in hopes to avoid clickers!

Update on velocity data for my 30-284 improved.

55.5 gr h4350 and cci200, Peterson brass, 185juggs
2815avg on my Caldwell Chrono at 13ish feet.
24" barrel, 10twist, 4 groove mullerworks

My drop at 600 using Litz BC for the juggs in the shooter app was closer to 2800fps.

Not bad! Especially since it's fantastically accurate

Is anyone still playing with this cartridge?' I'm m back to investigating loads now that hunting season is out.

My chamber is set up for a shorter freebore than I think most of you are shooting. I have 185 juggs seated just ahead of the donut area and with 0.020 jump. GRT is showing I'm at 93% fill with h4350 (68.75gr H20 cap). I'd like to be able to fill the rest of that space with h4350 without seeing pressure signs. Currently, I'm sitting at 55.5gr for my load and I saw light ejector marks starting at 56.5.

I'm currently thinking I want to either:

- investigate this chamber as is with 185s and ramshot hunter, staball 6.5 , and h4831sc to see if I can better my current velocity with a full case and no pressure OR...
- throat this barrel out further (maybe to 0.185 - 0.209 FB) to see if I can decrease pressure and fill the case completely with h4350. This option may not leave me with much bullet bearing in the neck though

Did some pressure testing on a couple of powders.

24" 4 groove
185 juggernauts
Cci200
Peterson 5x

All recorded with a Caldwell chronograph

Hunter
56.5 - 2798
57 - 2795
57.5 - 2793
58 - 2809
59 - 2874
59.5 - 2857
60 - 2873
60.5 - 2917 full case

H4831sc - probably much better with a 200gr bullet
57.5 - 2657
58 - 2661
58.5 - 2679
59 - 2743
60.5 - 2780 compressed

Staball
54.5 - 2708
55 - 2700
55.5 - 2732
56 - 2732
57.5 - 2862
58 - 2881
58.5 - 2906
59 - 2942

No definitive pressure signs but a very slight ejector mark on the highest hunter charge.

Accuracy was pretty good. Surprisingly small group considering the charge spread. About 1 moaish for all staball charges and maybe 1.5moa for hunter charges. 4831 was about 1moa. I'm not a competitor but I think developing a load of one of these charges would be pretty accurate.

I'll bet the 30-284 would do great with a 176 Atip well past 600yd .
Been wanting to build one for many years to replace the old trusty 308.
Now y'all got my wheels turning again...dammit!

I have looked at this cartridge for a while because I shoot a 284 and have lots of backup brass in my inventory. However, I am curious if there is any practical difference in accuracy between this and an 30-06 or 30-06 AI? Also, why shoot a 185 when the 200's would be better in the winds? Again, just curious.

See thread 30-284.....lots of fun
I'm still shooting both rifles. 6-700 rounds on each one. Both very accurate (.28-.32 moa at 5-600 yards). I've shot at 1,000 yd a few times at half moa with 230. Shooting 230 atip at 2510 and 200.20x at 2720. No idea how this would compare to 30-06, but probably very close. I shoot only 5 shot strings. Both rifles are about heads up with my 7Saum and 180 Ber. in high winds. When wind is not blowing, the Saum is slightly better accuracy. 2510 sounds slow, but buddy its like a freight train, it just keeps on truckin.

@Steveb , I don't know if there would be a practical difference in accuracy. With a properly designed chamber and throat, I bet there wouldn't be. I know I couldn't shoot the difference. I'm just a hunter and work on shooting my hunting rifles as accurately as I can.

@Longrange57 , I forgot about that thread and that I asked you a couple of questions about your loads! I'm glad to hear you're still shooting those well. I'd like to try a 200gr bullet or close to it, but my throat is 0.130, which is just right for the 185 juggs I've been shooting. I've been considering renting a unithroater to increase the throat, or having my reamer reground to a 0.200 fb.

I've been trying to look at the ballistics and what I might be able to achieve for velocity with various bullets to see if it would be better to go 200gr+ or stick to 175-180gr for hunting. My max distance is about 700-800 depending on conditions, so the wind factor doesn't seem to be as big if the shot is shorter and the bullet is moving faster like a 175.

What brass have you been using?
