excessive cock on close, **updated/resolved**

Just got a Kelbly atlas tactical Action from brownells. Installed a trigger tech diamond and lifted the bolt. all is good. I go to close the bolt, and it gives me about 10 degrees of smooth throw downward, and then it kind of hits a stop point where it gets stuck. (perhaps the lugs making contact with the race ways?) you give it some pressure, and it makes it past what feels like a little bump, and then you have to still put pressure on it to close it. the trigger works fine. I tried 2 different triggers and they are both doing the same thing.

I feel like i'm going to gall the lugs. Any suggestions? Thanks

Had a similar issue, different action. Coming from the Savage end of things, when I went back to the Rem700 clone world everyone had been gushing about how wonderful the trigger selection was and how easy it was to just pull two pins and swap triggers. Easy peasy.

I went through a major process finding a trigger that would work on my action (Bighorn Origin). Straight out of the box, half the triggers I tried required more force to open the bolt than the worst military surplus action. One, a tuned 40X trigger was acceptable... but it was more than 50% cock on close, which I didn't particularly like. I had a gunsmith work on the cocking piece, which got it working 'okay'... but then I had to send the bolt back to the manufacturer for unrelated warranty repair... and it came back with a brand new cocking piece, and all the work undone. Finally found that a TriggerTech Diamond worked pretty well with a minimum of shenanigans. What a friggin' PITA. Definitely not all rainbows and ponies like I'd expected.

hey Al, I do. I also noticed that after I cock it, and lift the bolt and then go to close it again, it still feels like it hits a wall, and then takes a little pressure to close it. only other custom actions I have are a definace tenacity and Kauger brii and neither of them do this.

Wondering if i different trigger hanger would do anything. pretty disappointing.

How much pin fall does it have?

If it has more than .240-.250” of pin fall that’s your answer. If so you’ll need a different hanger.

Check the pin fall off the back of the cocking piece. Different triggers sometimes need different hangers. My Atlas with a Jewell is butter with the standard trigger.

Cock on close is defined as when the cocking piece engages the trigger block and starts holding the firing pin assy rearward as the bolt goes forward.

Keblys takes great pains to insure that all of their actions have sufficient firing pin travel, which I believe is around .250 inch.

It does not sound like you have a cock on close problem, but a locking lug ramp engagement problem.

again forgive my stupidity but when i look down into the action it does appear I get resistance right at the point of engagement of the lugs contacting the raceway. thats when I need to give it pressure to get over that little hump and then continue the pressure as it closes

Yes, .2455” of pin fall (assuming the .0410” is how much the cocking piece is protruding from the shroud). That’s right where it should be. Now measure the cocking piece protrusion with bolt forward but not rotated at all. The difference between that and your fully cocked measurement (.0410”) would be the amount of cock on close. Tell us what that is.
