glued in action removal - Please help

Xring came by way of Dusty for Tommie, I cut toe and pistol grip for poodle shooting.
Terry Leonard came from Greg Brooks.
Red & green stocks came from Zack,
Red stock had just been cut and had rudder installed. It was getting repainted irregardless.
Green stock, what can I say shit happens.

I've got a rifle that is just has pillars but no bedding that shoots small, ill be sure to pay particular attention to see how it shoots once bedded. I'm thinking there will be a little load tweaking.

I respect your response, especially the willingness to accept the outcome if ever trying to remove from a done rifle.

Doesn't sound like the stock I had in mind but I bet it'll be sweet when done, like all of your work.

I have never had trouble removing a glue in with a regular old iron. Just don’t use one of the fancy ones that automatically shuts off when left unattended.

Jackie, I think the old Sunbeam iron I use still has the $3 Goodwill store price tag on it. When I was young and between girl friends, I had to iron my own clothes.

Great, high quality iron there and just toss it in the microwave to warm it up. Holds heat like crazy. Lol!

Key to getting them out is to let the heat have time to soak. Dont rush it or some of the epoxy will still be stuck to the action. The tang needs more time than the middle. A little chip or some effect on the paint should be expected, if they come off real easy it was not a good glue in job to begin with. Not sure why you would want to take one out unless your changing stocks then a little chip doesnt matter. I heat an action wrench and let it soak until you can smell it them give it a try, if its not ready do it again. As to testing the glue in, I have. And I prefer to glue and screw for that reason. I dont think its about stress, but vibration.

You can definitely smell epoxies as they are heated.

The first glue-in I took apart was a used Panda 6PPC I bought. It had been through several owners and never shot for any of them. I got three barrels with it. "They're all dogs. Just good for fire forming, is all." was what the seller told me. I also found out there had been 4-5 different scopes tried. When I took the barrelled action out, there was no doubt as to why it hadn't shot well.

You'd be surprised how useful they are....a guide when removing glued in actions, checking 'annealing' temperature, etc. This one is under $25 and fits in your pocket.

It’s nice to see the size come down - that would make a good stocking stuffer. I’ve really liked the narrow beam models from Kline - electricians use that model to check the temp of individual electrical connections, but it’s nice to use with any large or small parts.

Years ago i had to remove an action from a Scoville stock and I took a heavy quilted cooking mitt and cut a hole in the finger end so I could slide it over the barrel and forearm down to the action. I then separated the seam where the two scope bases were located so they would stick out above the glove. Put the iron on top of the scope bases, a rubber wedge between the barrel and the fore end and about an hour later it separated with no damage to the stock.

Some say put it in the freezer over night and it will break loose with a little pressure applied. That did not work for me. I had the wife pick up an old iron from Salvation Army. 5 bucks and 20 minutes- the panda came loose. Borden did the bedding and glueing. It came apart perfectly.

Wedge between the barrel and fore arm. Hot mandrel in the bore of the action (I just heat up my rear entry action wrench). Truthfully, I hate heating Stolle actions or sleeved actions but have done both. WH

I removed a stock from a Panda a couple months ago. I wanted to use an iron but didn’t have an old one without the auto shutoff.

Instead, I used a 1/2x2x8 long piece of aluminum plate that I set on top of the dovetail, then heated the plate with a MAP gas torch. The heat transferred quite nicely and in no time the stock was removed.
